The Runaway takes elements of a traditional crime drama, but reimagines it through the perspective of people in their 20s. Our goal with this sizzle is to develop it into a longer web series, where the characters grapple with morality in a modern landscape.

Mission Statement

The team behind The Runaway is a culturally diverse crew of filmmakers with a passionate drive to create innovative short films that are entertaining, but also thought-provoking. Our short films have been screened at festivals worldwide, as we are all active members of the Canadian film industry.

The Story

A Brief Synopsis

A Girl with many secrets. A Detective with a goal. A man with a torn heart. And a Con with nothing to lose. Do you want to join the hunt?

When the crimes of Chiara Montgomery's past start to catch up to her and she is forced to go on the run, her best friend, Paulina, is shocked to learn about Chiara's double life. Yet as Paulina begins helping the police to find Chiara, lead investigator Detective Hale starts to question how much Paulina really knows.

When everyone has something to lose, how do you figure out who is telling the truth?

Reimagining Genre Stereotypes

The Runaway asks the question; can you truly escape your past? Is it something that is always a part of your identity, or can you truly let it go and walk away?

The film follows the complex relationship between the protagonist and villian, while exploring the perspectives of developed female characters and offering a fresh take on the crime drama genre.

Establishing The Visual Style

The overall style and tone of The Runaway will be dark and gritty, highlighted with low lighting and agressive shadows. The colour grade is cold, emphasizing the blues and greener undertones of the production design. The visuals are intended to visually convey the film's tense setting, while the quick pacing of the overall delivery keeps viewers engaged. Our primary visual references are grittier pieces such as Silence of the Lambs, Dexter, and The Wire. Examples of character references for Chiara include Anna Delvey/Sorokin from Inventing Anna and Love Quinn & Joe Goldberg from You.
