Mission Statement

Our film is a fun comedy that reverses gender stereotypes. With actresses in all the stereotypical male roles, and male actors in roles typically portrayed by women, we poke fun at the way gender is portrayed and the sexism that is rampant in Hollywood film.

The Story

The Story

Liz is a very successful, very unhappy, slightly overweight, single-but-there's-nothing-wrong-with-that, overworked business executive who dreams of being a photographer. Feeling overwhelmed by a promotion that makes her feel trapped, her gorgeous, perfect sister's upcoming wedding to another even more gorgeous woman, and an overbearing Senator mother, Liz is having a hard time figuring out what she wants out of the rest of her life(but getting the hot guy who works at the health food store wouldn't be a bad start...).

Finding the courage to quit the "perfect" job isn't easy. Neither is asking out the hot guy at the grocery store. And finding who you are and what makes you happy is hard. But never finding it is even harder.

Follow this film to get to see Liz stumble, flounder, and fall in the most ridiculous of ways on her personal and very relateable quest for happiness, and see her ultimately reach it...or at least take the first few steps.

The Story Behind the Story

In writing our new feature film, we (Patrick and Lolo) had several goals we wanted to achieve. We wanted to:

      - Make a film that was the kind of feel-good comedy WE like to watch. One of those go-to films you put in whenever you feel a little down and need a pick-me-up, or just want a good laugh.

      - Tell a story about the importance of happiness. This might sound like a "duh" - of course everyone wants to be happy! But we live in a world where we see too many people living their life based on what they think they "should" do, instead of what they want to do. This is a hard loop to break out of, and this film reflects that struggle to break out of doing what is expected of you and seeking what makes you feel alive again.

      - Point out and make fun of gender stereotypes and how ridiculous they are. (Expecially in Hollywood movies)

      - And show off the incredible talent in the city we live in - Kansas City!

And we did it! "The Way It Goes" is a hilarious, upbeat comedy, in which our female protagonist is a business executive who finds the courage to court the man of her dreams(or, at least, the man she thinks is dreamy), and quit her high-paying office job and pursue her dream of being a photographer. We make fun of the gender roles you see in Hollywood films by completely flipping them in ours: Liz works in an all-female office with a male secretary, who, along with the other handsome men in the film, are objectified in comedic and over-sexualized ways and frequently harassed. We are also repping KC hard with our 100% local cast and crew, and with the entire film being shot right here, in KC!

We have already begun production on this fantastic project, with a 100% volunteer cast and crew, and are now raising the funds to continue with production, and put the finishing touches on this hilarious movie.

This is a project we are passionate about bringing to the screen. And this is a film we are certain you will love.

The Creators

We are Lolo Loren & Patrick Poe. We are award-winning filmmakers who have worked together (as IX Film Productions and, beginning two years ago, as a married couple as well as as business partners!) to make five hilarious feature films in the past five years, which we wrote, directed and produced:

Intermission, Mr. Lee, She Loves Me She Loves Me Not, William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and, currently in editing - Zoink!

In addition to these feature films, we have made multiple shorts, sketches, and webseries, and run an interview podcast and a live standup comedy show. You can view more of our fun content on our facebook and youtube pages!

As IX Film Productions, we are passionate and dedicated to making the world a funnier place, one film at a time. Everyone needs to be reminded to lighten up and laugh sometimes. And we are here to be that reminder.

The Goal

Our goal is two-fold:

First, is the fundraising aspect. We are already in production on this project(we began filming on August 20th!) and are working to raise $8,000 to pay for the rest of production, scoring, music licensing, and festival submission fees, to name a few(there's a more detailed budget list if you scroll further down the page). This is a movie you want to see, so even if you only have a couple bucks to spare, send it our way! Every little bit helps. Don't have a lot of cash laying around? No worries! Make a seed&spark account (it's FREE!) and FOLLOW our page. This is a totally free and awesome way to help out, as I'll explain below.

Second, is the "Hometown Heroes" competition, being put on via a partnership between the Duplass Brothers and Seed&Spark. They are going to select a handful of winners, who will get their projects executive produced by the Duplass Brothers (this is a big deal, people - these are super talented, super funny guys! They are thy guys behind the HBO show "Togetherness" as well as the feature films "The Bronze" "Skeleton Twins" "Adult Beginners" and many more), as well as potentially getting a piece of the $25,000 prize(which would give us everything we need for this film to really go places!) They are looking for independent, passionate filmmakers who are representing their hometown - which pretty much defines us. :)

To even just QUALIFY for this competition, we must A) Run a successful campaign and reach our goal of $8,000. B) Have 500 followers right here on Seed&Spark (see, I told you your follows were valuable!) and C) Be posting video updates at least twice a week (which means you should definitely follow us, because there will be a lot of fun behind-the-scenes content going up on this page!)

The Cast

We are SO incredibly excited by the cast we have put together for this film! They come from a wide variety of backgrounds - from Shakespearean trained actors, to stand up comedians - but they all have a lot in common - incredible talent, flawless comedic timing, a passion that is unrivaled, and they all call Kansas City home.

The Team

We are thrilled to have a crew made up of some incredibly talented individuals, several of which are award-winning filmmakers in their own right.

The Stuff We Need

For $8,000 we feel we can make the film the best it can be. Here is how the money will be spent:

Location Fees - $1,000

This will cover renting the apartment that is Liz’s ($300), renting an office to film in ($550), and filming in a hospital room ($150). The rest of the locations, we are generously being allowed to film in for free!

Licensing Music - $3,500

There are several very funny scenes in the film where the lead characters sing karaoke/are at a karaoke bar. This is awesome – but means we need to license music for them to sing! Licensing a track to use in this manner costs between $500 and $1,000 per song, and we’d like to have at least a couple! We’d also like to potentially have a song under the opening and closing credits.

Costuming - $270

We have some fun costuming needs for this one – including suits, jungle outfits, and uniforms!

Craft Services - $1,250 (25 Shoot Days x $50 a day)

Actors need to eat. They get crabby when they don’t. ;)

Festival Entry Fees - $1,000

Making movies is awesome, but we also want people to be able to see them!

Makeup and Wigs - $180

We get to old age makeup on multiple actors in this film – which awesome, but requires some special stuff!

Props - $300

Our lead character, Liz, is a wannabe photographer – as such, we are printing and framing a lot of photographs to hang in her apartment.

Composer - $500

For all those emotional moments in the film!

Total Budget: $8,000

What if we EXCEED our goal?

If we exceed our goal of $8,000, it will give us the ability to put additional money into these places:

Music Licensing: $2,000

Festival Fees: $500 - $? (We will submit to more and more festivals based on how many we can afford).

Traveling to Festivals: $500 - $3,000? (Depends how many we get into!)

Advertising/Posters/Festival Materials: $500 - $1,000

To Sum Up

This is a project that has a lot of people deeply invested in it, and money already put forth into it. The entire cast and crew believe in this project SO MUCH that they are working on it for free, on their own time. We know this is a film that you will love and want to watch again and again - and at a cost of only $8,000, it's a steal.

So, let's review how YOU can get this film made so that YOU can watch it!

Contribute - Every little bit of money helps get us closer to wrapping production, whether it's $5 or $500!

Share - Tell your friends about this movie. Tell your family about this movie. Tell your foes about this movie - word of mouth is the best advertising there is! Share about it on facebook, twitter, and instagram! And tell your friends in person if you're the kind of person that does that.

Follow - Following us here on seed&spark costs YOU nothing, but means the world to US, and will help us win the Duplass Brothers "Hometown Heroes" competition! Take a few minutes to create an account and follow along with our journey, whether or not you donate, we'd love to have you as part of the club!

Phew. That was a lot of information! If you read all the way to the bottom, thank you! You have our gratitude just for that. If you skipped to the bottom, well - just look at the three steps above and follow those and you'll do good. ;)

Thank you for supporting this campaign and joining our group of followers - it really does mean the world to us.

Sincerely,

Patrick & Lolo
