Mission Statement

They Slay is a queer-led film, both behind and in front of the camera. We aim to pay homage to elements of the horror and comedy genres that hold a strong significance within the LGBTQ+ community.

The Story

Longtime friends Raemee, Maggie and Lee come together for an annual Halloween hang-out at Lee’s house. Things are different this year when Maggie's new partner, Sam, and Lee’s younger sibling, Charlie, join the group. When they reignite their tradition of playing with a spirit board, they accidentally invite a supernatural being to join in the party. Uncomfortable truths rise to the surface and things take a dark turn, calling into question if the friendships will survive the night- or if the friends will survive at all.

Colorful and cut-throat, They Slay will have you screaming with delight.

Raemee: Raemee is an intelligent and mischievous individual. Best friends with Maggie and Lee, they have found themselves being left out more and more often from the group. They are the life of the party, but sometimes don’t know (or care) when they have taken things a step too far. Unafraid to call out the bullshit, Raemee tends to come off as provocatory, especially in a group of people who does not vocalize their problems.

Maggie: Young pagan Maggie has seemingly perfected the art of 'going with the flow'. Though they are currently dating Sam, they had a previous relationship with another member of the group. Maggie tries to keep the peace, sometimes even at the detriment to themselves and those around them.

Sam: Sam is the newest addition to the group and Maggie’s current partner. A quiet, shy, and nerdy energy with a lovable charm to them, they remind you of a sunny day or a warm hug. They must tackle their own hesitation to anger and learn how to stand up for themselves when they find out secrets have been kept from them.

Lee: Lee is the reason this chaotic group of friends continues to hang out after all this time. They are the organizer, the voice of reason, and on a night where supernatural forces come into play, the skeptic.

Charlie: An odd duck that’s out of luck, Charlie cannot seem to find their footing until a sudden change in character makes them the 'life of the party'.

Lindsay Carter (they/he): "Part of what took me so long to allow myself to question my gender identity was the fear of where that would put me as a performer. I’m a masculine presenting non-binary person assigned female at birth with a high soprano vocal range. Growing up, I never saw anyone like that so I thought that person could not exist. Even as trans and non-binary people are slowly starting to appear in media more and more, performance opportunities are rare, especially for those breaking into the industry. So few casting calls are open to actors with the gender expression I have. I’m not feminine enough for most 'women' roles and I cannot pass as a cisgender man. I was so tired of seeing unnecessary gender expressions assigned to casting calls that I was otherwise qualified for. People always say 'When you’re having trouble getting work in acting, create your own.' That’s what we started to do. We decided we wanted to open up this experience to a small ensemble cast with beautiful, flawed, and complex characters available to the right actors regardless of gender expression or identity. Hopefully, this will become the norm in the industry. For now, we have to create our own art and show people that there is a desire for more gender-diverse and inclusive content and including the trans and non-binary community only improves the quality of media we all get to enjoy."

Lo Lundeen (they/them): "Growing up, it was difficult finding pieces of media that emphasized an acceptance of various gender identities. I remember feeling a lot of confusion because there was an element of me that didn’t necessarily fit with what an expectation of my gender should be and it lead to feeling very isolated for much of my upbringing. My goal with this piece is to create a film that normalizes the presence of the gender spectrum and shows storytelling through a queer lens in a fun, inventive way. It is so important that the friendship these characters have is not contingent on their gender identities."
