LOGLINE/SHORT SYNOPSIS
A black Russian teenager must make a life or death decision after having his first sexual encounter with a white Russian pastor’s daughter.
At a Church Youth Function pizza party Xander, an introverted black Russian teenager, is aggressively pursued by, Tammy, an extroverted white Russian teenager, leading to their first sexual encounter. Ashamed and afraid, Xander takes off in a rush, trying to avoid contact, only to run into Tammy’s Baptist Pastor father the very next day. When Tammy’s father offer’s him a precarious choice, Xander slowly realizes he must choose wisely if he wants to live.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
This film was birthed from my experiences as the only black teenager in a youth group I was a part of in Louisville, Kentucky and also an article in the UK Guardian on what is means to be Black in Russia. The church I went to as a youth was made up of mostly white people and I was hyper aware of the awkwardness that followed me everywhere I went. Knowing that Black Russian youth's had some of the same experiences I had made me want to re-explore those feelings in a film and that's how Things of Beauty Burn was born. This film is an attempt by me to shed some light on how race and class is even an issue in the Christian church. My goal is to make people re-examine their Christian worldview to make sure it’s authentic and not rooted in something fallacious.

New exhibition examines legacy of Soviet Cold War scheme offering Africans free study – and the children they left behind. The Calvert Journal reports “When people ask me about my background it becomes a long explanation,” says photographer Liz Johnson Artur. “I usually start by explaining how my mum is Russian, my dad is Ghanaian and I was born in Bulgaria...”

Johnson Artur is one of a small population of “Russians of colour” born to Russian mothers and African or Caribbean fathers who were offered free university education in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. After making contact with her father for the first time in 2010, Johnson Artur decided to start documenting the stories of some of the 40,000 other “Russians of colour”, alongside journalist Sarah Bentley.
Джонсон Артур - одно из небольшого населения «россиян цвета», рожденных от русских матерей и отцов Африки или Карибского моря, которым в период холодной войны было предложено бесплатное университетское образование в Советском Союзе. “Most black Russians I met in Moscow and St Petersburg had also grown up without their fathers. Some had been fostered or grown up in children’s homes and had never met their mothers. But we all agreed that we felt Russian as well as African,” the photographer says. The presence of black Russians, who often describe themselves as “Afro-Russians”, is a reminder of a time when Soviet state internationalism and support for anti-colonial movements meant attitudes towards race were more neutral. However, today Russia struggles with a reputation for racism: from the abuse of black footballers to violent policing that in recent years has sparked street protests from African students in St Petersburg.
«Большинство чернокожих русских, которых я встретил в Москве, и Санкт-Петербург тоже выросли без их отцов. Некоторые из них были воспитаны или выросли в детских домах и никогда не встречались с их матерями. Most of Johnson Artur’s subjects have grown up without much contact with other black people or with little of the shared culture and identity familiar to African-Americans and black Britons.

What they do have in common is the experience of prejudice and confusion shown towards them by much of the Russian public. “Those who grew up and live in Russia still have to justify on a daily basis the fact that they are Russians too,” Johnson Artur explains.
