During a time when antisemitism is raging and disability stories are few and far between, THIRTEEN puts Judaism and disability front and center with a heartfelt story based on the writer's life.

Mission Statement

Because of my sister, my family has spent the last four decades advocating tirelessly for disability equality. For me, I became a journalist and filmmaker to continue our efforts. THIRTEEN is another story I've written, based on reality, to hopefully create a more progressive and accepting world.

The Story

THIRTEEN is a short film I wrote that follows a mother as she fights to have a Bat Mitzvah for her terminally ill, severely disabled daughter at their synagogue that refuses to break from tradition. The story is inspired by reality. Specifically, it was based on my older sister's Bat Mitzvah 26 years ago and my mother's advocacy.

My mom - a single mother - worked tirelessly to ensure that my sister and I always felt loved, cared for, and happy in the home. She also did everything in her power to change the way the world viewed disabilities and to advocate for my sister so she could experience life milestones like everyone else.

Her advocacy led her to request a Bat Mitzvah, or the Jewish coming-of-age ceremony, for my sister at our conservative synagogue, something many didn't think would happen. The negativity stems from tradition. For Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, a child must attend Hebrew school and study for nine months to a year before reciting their Torah portion in front of a congregation - something my sister couldn't do.

But our rabbi, Rabbi Kahn, granted my mom's request, who modified and officiated the Bat Mitzvah for my sister. My mom recalls him saying it was "the holiest Bat Mitzvah he'd ever been a part of."

It was an emotional day, full of lots of tears and smiles. It was such a big deal at the time in our town that not one but two Jewish publications wrote articles. (You can see a photo of my mom and sister in one of the articles above.)

It's a day that stayed with me for over two decades, so I decided to produce a short film based on the experience.

THIRTEEN is a bit different from the real-life story. My sister wasn't terminally ill, and our rabbi was happy to help. But the rabbi in THIRTEEN, the 'roadblock' in the story, is an amalgamation of other contentious situations we faced at our synagogue - and in life - because our family wasn't normal or traditional in the Jewish world or the non-Jewish world. The short also exemplifies my mother's endless love for her children and work to create a better world.

We live during a time when antisemitism is rising; in fact, it's been at an all-time high in the past few years. According to the Anti-defamation League (ADL), in 2021, there were 2,717 antisemitic incidents of assault, harassment, and vandalism - the highest number of incidents since the ADL began tracking in 1979. In 2022, according to Statistica, that number jumped significantly to 3,697. Also, when it comes to Hollywood, Jews are often portrayed poorly in the media, which many believe contributes to the rising antisemitism and misunderstanding of Jewish people.

When it comes to disability, 61 million Americans identify as disabled, and yet only 3.1% of characters on screen have a disability

And that's why you should donate to help create THIRTEEN - a nuanced story that puts people with disabilities and Jewish people - front and center - and explores tradition, progression, culture, family, disability, and motherhood.

We plan to film THIRTEEN in late July or early August to complete the editing process by the end of the year. Following the film's completion, we will submit it to film festivals worldwide.

We ask that you donate to assist us in creating a film that has the potential to impact change, spread the message of inclusion, and amplify two communities that often find themselves on the receiving end of bigotry and hate.

Also, please follow us on social media (Twitter: @Thirteen_Film and Instagram: Thirteen_short_film) and spread the word to friends and family!
