Mission Statement

As current college students and filmmakers ourselves, we are constantly surrounded by the ever-changing social climate and impacted by economic uncertainty. This pilot recognizes the challenges people--especially the younger generation--face post-grad in this difficult job market.

The Story

Call Incoming...

Would you choose financial survival over doing the right thing? The world feels a bit broken sometimes and one of the worries that looms over college and high school students, especially the ones in artistic professions, is whether or not they're going to be able to afford life post-grad. All five of our writers are film students, entering the film industry in a time of instability and uncertainty. This is what inspired us to write This Call May Be Recorded. We want to create a film that serves as representation for all these very real, very normal, and very current fears our generation is experiencing.

With his roommate, a broke college graduate accepts a job at a sketchy telemarketing firm, but after realizing what the job entails, he begins to question his morals as he grapples with choosing money over the well-being of his elderly customers.

This Call May Be Recorded is a nihilistic 90s corporate satire set in the present day. It centers around current issues regarding the overcrowded job market that the younger generation has been handed. Our protagonist, Will, is the living, breathing answer to the question: Would you choose financial survival over doing the right thing? We aim to create a pilot that combines this social commentary with moody visuals. The score, production design, and costuming will reflect the corporate familiarity and hardships that many young graduates face. Think the style and satirical elements of movies like The Wolf of Wall Street or American Psycho...if they were made by Paul Thomas Anderson. Think sleazy bosses, chaotic office spaces, 90s box computers, and vintage telemarketing headsets.

The project was conceived by five film students at the University of Texas at Austin as a part of Incubator, a group within Texas Student Television. They will debut their pilot at the ATX TV Film Festival, the premiere Austin Television Festival offering and a high‑visibility platform that showcases upcoming TV shows, hosts Q&A sessions, and panel discussions with industry professionals. In order to get our project to this festival in May and to distributors after, we need you. Your support will aid the entirety of production: pre, principal, and post. Starting her career in stop-motion animation, she has branched out into many different forms of media production, including comedy, narrative and even puppetry! Ava utilizes her love for film and passion for all things business to bring compelling stories to life, and cannot wait to bring This Call May Be Recorded to big screen!

CULLEN RYAN

Cullen Ryan is a young filmmaker and Radio-Television-Film major at the University of Texas at Austin who is obsessed with films and TV. He started making films in his backyard at 8-years-old and hasn't stopped since. He is the director and one of the writers on This Call May Be Recorded and cannot wait for everyone to see it! He believes this project is not only an entertaining piece of TV, but it also speaks to many problems and anxieties his generation is feeling in their current day and age—and this TV pilot acts as an exaggerated reflection and critique of how money affects not just those at the top, but also those at the bottom.

BROOKLYN RICE

Brooklyn Rice is a Radio-Television-Film major at the University of Texas at Austin. She’s been passionate about storytelling and filmmaking her entire life, and got a chance to begin pursuing it in high school, making her own and submitting them to film festivals. She’s extremely excited for this new chapter at UT, starting with This Call May Be Recorded! It’s a perspective she feels hasn’t been greatly represented in television, and something close to her heart as someone entering an uncertain workforce (and economy) in the next few years. She wants to bring that perspective to the screen to show other generations how her’s is experiencing the world.

ANIRDESH MANDAVILLI

Anirdesh is from Frisco, Texas, and a freshman majoring in RTF at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s working as one of the Assistant directors on this pilot. He is very passionate about working on this film and being able to tell a great story.

CLAYTON LANEY

Clayton Laney a Radio-Television-Film student at the University of Texas at Austin. He has been pursuing film producing and directing, with the goal of showcasing unique and underrepresented stories. His favorite films are those that showcase the deep themes of being human or critique the world for what it can be.
