The Story
The stage is empty. A single spotlight illuminates the worn wooden floor where countless dancers have leaped, spun, dreamed, and cried.
For these dancers, ballet is more than movement - it’s memory, identity and home.
Family.
As the lights rise, silence lingers. A lone silhouette stands center stage, its details obscured. Then, she moves—graceful, deliberate. A young woman, twenty-one years old: Sarah Hutter.
For Sarah, ballet was a world of discipline and devotion, stitched into every ribbon of her pointe shoes. But what happens when you step away from the barre? When the music fades, does the rhythm ever truly leave you?
Through the Satin Ribbon is a deeply personal 6-minute documentary that explores Sarah’s journey beyond the studio as she discovers that dance is not simply an art form, but a lifelong bond between family, love and self-discovery.
LOVE AND FAMILY INTERTWINED WITH PAIN THROUGH A POETIC DOCUMENTARY
Through the Satin Ribbon delves deep into the enduring theme of pushing through the pain. Ballet is one of the most controversial forms of dance due to the pain it brings the person partaking in the sport. However, if it brings so much pain why do people still do it? That is what Through the Satin Ribbon hopes to uncover.
This documentary will push the boundaries of a conventional way to tell a story. It will evoke emotion through dance, much similar to how it feels when a dancer is performing on stage.
There are multiple reasons why I am telling this story. The simplest being my admiration for Sarah, and the work that she puts into every project that she puts her mind to. I have never seen her half-heartedly attempt any situation, from choir to working at the university paper, she is always on her A Game, and doing so with a smile.
But deeper than that is what family means to me. My mom has been there whenever she could, whether flying home last minute when I was given the Once in Royal David solo at my school’s Christmas Concert, to traveling all the way to Los Angeles to see me perform in Carrie: The Musical. She has been my biggest supporter and advocate, and without her I would not be pursuing my dreams. I hope to show my love for my own family through creating a beautiful homage to Sarah and hers.
I also used to dance growing up, and it still plays a fundamental part of who I am. While I am the only one in my family to pursue musical theater, I understand the struggle of having to balance your dreams and your reality, and how your love for that dream changes as your relationship does with it.
In conclusion, Through the Satin Ribbon is a beautiful homage to family and love, all through a shared medium of ballet. I cannot wait to take on this project, and I hope the love that I have for it has seeped into the my final version of the documentary.
I am beyond excited to bring this beautiful memoir of Sarah's relationship with ballet to life. It's a celebration of family, hardships and love, as Sarah dances through every area of her life. This is a documentary, ultimately, for family, about family.
