A small coastal gem on Florida’s west coast, Cedar Key has touched lives beyond its shores. But island life brings rough waters, as hurricanes impact the community. Cedar Key is rich with stories, each shaped by resilience, tradition, and an unbreakable connection to where its residents call home.

Mission Statement

Time and Tide captures the spirit and resilience of Cedar Key. Our goal is to showcase the unique life of this charming Floridian town and what must be done to preserve its unique beauty in this ever-changing world. By backing this project, you can help us bring this documentary to the finish line.

The Story

A documentary that is dedicated to showcasing the spirit of this small island, Time and Tide brings to life the beauty and challenges of living in Cedar Key. Following local residents in their day-to-day lives, we wanted to capture the question:

“Why Cedar Key?”

An island with a population of less than 700 people, Cedar Key has captured the hearts of tourists from around the world, with its small-town feel and coastal charm. Through resident interviews and island insight, Time and Tide offers an intimate portrait of a community striving to preserve its identity and rich history.

Our whole team fell in love with this island. With the world's uncertainty, we knew if we didn't capture Cedar Key now, we may never will. With the personal connection the two directors have, we want to see this film reach the finish line and have as many people fall in love with the island as much as we did.

“Ever since I was a child, I would visit this island. My parents are both from Cedar Key and my lineage goes back generations, so being able to tell this story was very important to me. I believe that I have always been infatuated with the stories shared around this town; and I wanted to capture that feeling I have always had in some way. So to some degree, this film is a time capsule for me to be able to share how I have seen this place in time with others.”

-Cole Taylor, Co-Director

“The first time I went to Cedar Key, I got to see what this small island had to offer and meet some of the island’s great residents. But soon after, Hurricane Helene struck, devastating the island. Many of the houses and buildings were affected, showcasing how one hurricane can make an impact. However, after going back to the island again, I got to see how the people of Cedar Key started to rebuild and keep their spirits high. It’s not the first time a hurricane has hit, but you can tell that they know to keep on moving. Cole and I wanted to capture that resilience. To show that this island is more than a hurricane hit. The people and the culture are special, and we know the best way to document that is through a documentary. With our small but mighty team, we hope to connect our audience to this beautiful town and see it, not only through our lens, but through the town’s love of the island.”

-Katie Smith, Co-Director

“When approached with the opportunity of filming in Cedar Key, I was thrilled with the idea of filming in a new space, but I did not know what to expect. It was instantly clear that filming this documentary will be an unforgettable project because of Cedar Key’s beauty and its wonderful population. With Cole and Katie’s direction, I felt confident in capturing Cedar Key in a way that people could take in its liveliness to the fullest extent. Pulling from Lance Oppenheim’s 2020 film, Some Kind Of Heaven, I made it my mission to film the authenticity of another small corner of Florida that has grown a liking to golf carts.”

-Juan Martinez, Cinematographer

We filmed the documentary in the summer of 2025, staying with family and using our own resources to visualize and capture this documentary. The love this island has shown us is very apparent in the filming, and we are very thankful to have the opportunity to capture it. Supporting our pledge will get us to the finish line as we go forth in the editing and post-production process. We want to make this documentary the best it can be, and with your help, we can have it flourish!
