KEN JONES relishes being the "whitest Gaysian ever!" As the talk show host of "Mornings with Ken, " he takes pride in thriving in a competitive mostly-white TV environment. However, Ken soon realizes he's merely a "token" and as such, goes on a journey towards authenticity and self-acceptance.

Mission Statement

Hi Everyone, I'm Mike Talplacido, author of Kiss My Mike (a memoir). My goal for the project is to not only showcase LGBTQ+ and Filipino-American characters/stories for increased representation in mainstream media but also to inspire other POCs to embrace their authentic identities and culture.

The Story

To Ken with Love is a story about Ken Jones, a flamboyant talk show host who relishes being the "whitest Gaysian ever" and takes pride in being the only Asian in the room.

I was inspired to tell this story because it is something that I have seen in my own community. I realize much of this phenomenon was really a result of internalized racism. As a Filipino-American and an Asian-American, I have seen so many of us struggle with our own identities. Many of us have felt "not enough" and as such have chosen to stay away from our own identities and culture. Worst, a few others I know have even "hated" themselves for being who they are (myself included at some point in the past).

This story needs to be told NOW. There is such a strong momentum going on for diversity and inclusion. And while there's been some progress made across the board, there's also still so much more we can do to create change and make a positive impact. It is also important for actions to start from within ourselves. And so, for a lot of Filipino-Americans and Asian-Americans, we must smash every bit of notion related to internalized racism. We must learn to love who we are and embrace our unique beauty.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We have already finished our principal photography in October 2022 (check out our Instagram and IMDB page) and are now looking for crowdfunding support to help with post-production expenses including paying our Editor, Composer, Colorist, Sound Mixer, and fees for festival submissions.

As an indie filmmaker, I have mostly self-funded this project out of my love for storytelling and the message this story is trying to tell.  Thus, it would be such a big help if you can support me get this project to the finish line. We want to see the final cut by December 31, 2022.

Once we have our final cut, we will submit our film to various LGBTQ+ and Asian Film Festivals including OutFest, HBO API Visionary, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, CAAMFest, Asian Cinevision, Asian World Film Festival, and many others.

I hope that you would help us get to the finish line so we can share our short film to our friends, families, and our LGBTQ+, Filipino-American and AAPI communities.

Please feel free to share our crowdfunding page to your friends as well!

Thank you so much!

-Mike and the rest of the "To Ken with Love" family
