The Story

Why are we making this film?
We are creating Tulips to exercise our agency over a story about agency. Too frequently, women are taught to romanticize sacrifice, dismiss intuition, and remain loyal to relationships that quietly erode their sense of self. Tulips emerged from conversations about these experiences and a desire to examine the emotional gray areas between love, obligation, hope, and denial. In the last year, we have seen many popular films centered on the institution of marriage. This short film, inspired by this thematic popularity, plans to explore interwoven expressions of dance, adding a new texture to this conversation.
Rather than presenting love as purely idealized or destructive, our creative team seeks to portray its complexity with emotional and physical nuance. Tulips seeks to create space for conversations about emotional manipulation, self-abandonment, and the courage it takes to confront uncomfortable truths.
"I see this film as the moment all guests at the wedding wish they could see from a just-married couple: the moment right after stepping out of the public's view at the venue. Our endlessly curious minds want to know the drama and wonder if their love is as authentic as they presented it to be in front of their family and friends.
This project, on a shoestring budget, is bringing together a remarkably creative all-women crew to tell a story that melodically interweaves dance and the raw emotions of complex romantic love. The group, all having just completed their Chapman senior thesis films, sought to extend their collaborative spirit into an intimate project: a short film I could not miss the chance to support."
Statement from Crowdfunding Manager Paige Filipan
This film is for...
-people with anxious and avoidant attachment styles
-anyone who has ignored their intuition in a relationship
-people who believe in honest, women-led storytelling that confronts the complexities of love
As an all-women student production from Chapman University, Tulips also serves as a creative collaboration grounded in the academic and artistic development of its team, allowing emerging filmmakers to transform their education into a meaningful, visually driven narrative. Our mission is to create work that resonates deeply, challenges familiar narratives of relationships, and contributes to the growing presence of women-led storytelling in film.
