The Story
TURN AWAY is a psychological thriller film about Omar, a dazed gunshot victim who awakens from a coma and experiences post-traumatic amnesia. Shortly after awakening, he is snuck out of a San Francisco hospital by his suspicious partner Isaac. As they venture onto a boat under the cover of the night, a chilling revelation threatens to tear them apart.
Dramatic tonal changes from heartache and hopefulness, to a menacing atmosphere and a sense of dread. The pacing of Turn Away is slow burning, keeping you constantly at the edge of your seat as new details and images unfold. Visually, this is conveyed through high contrast, low key and moody lighting. Set in present day San Francisco Bay Area, the film uses iconic settings, however the scenic landscapes never overshadow or break the building tension, only enhance it by creating a sense of isolation.
We've scrolled around on streaming platforms for something like TURN AWAY, a psychological thriller film that centers Queer, Latino characters, but we couldn't find it. And a major reason why is because films with queer and Latino leads, let alone genre films, hardly ever receive opportunities to be funded or shot. Our team is so blessed to have had the opportunity to get selected by the Latino Film Institute and the program sponsor Netflix, and we need your support to make sure that we can help continue to build a strong pathway for other members of our communities to watch and pursue their own dream film.
We are in the final stages of of our film, and have entered post-production. The leaves us costs for color grade, sound design, sound mixing, and visual effects! We need your help so we can finish and deliver it to the Latino Film Institute and the LFI Inclusion Fellowship sponsor, Netflix.
Previous projects within this program have landed on Netflix. We want to make sure we can get this short film done and on the streamer! You could change our lives with your support!
If we raise an additional $2000: Festival submission fees stack up quite easily. Like applying to college, just a few can easily cost a couple hundred dollars! And that doesn't guarantee a selection. Therefore, submitting to many renowned festivals is essential so the film can have its opportunity to reach in-person audiences around the world and build a reputation!
- If we raise an additional $4000: We've submitted to the festivals, and we got into them. Now what? We gotta make sure people know about it! Sometimes great movies are made, but they never had a long life because nobody even had the opportunity to hear about! Therefore, putting extra resources towards marketing film is essential so this movie can spook a wider audience.
- If we raise an additional $7000: Surely, you don't need more than that. Well, you know how every big movie you watch has press? There's people working hard to make sure that happens smoothly. We will use additional resources to also hire a publicist, a specialist in promoting and championing a project.
With Hitchcock-like suspense that makes audiences squirm in their seats, this film will continuously disturb, but its final moments will break hearts. The story of Turn Away stems from some of my deepest fears – experiencing betrayal from someone I love and trust, and becoming prey. I believe horror is especially terrifying when connecting with real life experiences which is why I know audiences are going to gravitate towards these characters and their relationship. I want this film to continuously keep audiences on the edge of their seat, not knowing what's going to happen next."
