Mission Statement

As a wise woman named Reese Witherspoon once said, “Women’s stories matter — they just matter.” Unfortunately, there’s still a lack of authentic, complex women’s stories. Ones by and about queer women are even rarer. UNBRIDLED features a majority of LGBTQ+ women both onstage and behind the scenes.

The Story

WHAT THE HELL IS IT ABOUT?

Meet Powell Bishop, a renowned author and revered literature professor.

Got it?

Great.

Now, let’s move on to the important stuff and talk about who this play is actually about — the women in his life.

There’s his dependable, stoic wife of 20 years, Rebekah, who’s a writer, too… not that you’d know it. Her own goals took a backseat to support Powell’s, and yeah, maybe she’s a little bitter about it. You would be, too, if your husband constantly forgot your anniversary and you had to deal with the bitchiest mother-in-law on the planet.

Then there’s Powell’s high school sweetheart, Francie Sloane, whom he still sleeps with every once in a while. Born into money, Francie is bubbly, erratic, and everything Rebekah isn’t. Sure, she has a little bit of an alcohol problem and still isn’t over her divorce from the Earl of Monaco that happened a decade ago, but she’s a fun time. She swears!

Last but certainly not least is Monet Adams, one of Powell’s students. A talented writer, Powell takes an interest in her, inviting her to workshop each other’s writing after school. She knows how it looks, but it’s strictly business, okay? She has big dreams, after all, and few resources with which to achieve them, so she has to take the help where she can get it. Too bad Powell inconveniently drops dead from a heart attack during one of their critique sessions.

Unfortunately, Rebekah soon discovers she is not only a widow but a broke one, finding out that Powell gambled his entire fortune away. The good news: he leaves her the house. The bad news: he leaves it to Francie and Monet, too, and circumstances find the two of them cashing in on their right to move into it with her.

Three women primed to hate each other living under the same roof. What could go wrong?

Well, as it turns out, a lot, especially when the three of them are each keeping secrets of their own, which all come to light during an explosive Thanksgiving dinner.

Still, female friendship is a powerful thing, and it can be found in the most unexpected of places. Maybe — just maybe — Powell’s fuckboy tendencies could be the best thing to ever happen to them.

HOW THE HELL DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS?

I went through a massive Cameron Diaz phase (coincidentally, right around the time I came out as a lesbian... though I'm sure there's no correlation...), and one of my favorite films in her eclectic filmography is The Other Woman, which sees her, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton get revenge on the guy who was lying to and cheating on all of them. Some of the things really haven't aged well, but I've always loved the concept of women banding together and finding a weird found family in each other after being wronged.

I am also a certified trashy reality TV lover. During COVID, the Real Housewives of Almost Every City became like family to me. Sonja Morgan and Countess Luann de Lesseps are two of my all-time favorites, and I find their wacky friendship delightful. There are certainly shades of them in these characters.

Finally, I think the end of Crazy, Stupid Love, where all of the secrets come out at once, is a masterpiece, and I have always aspired to write something hilariously, gloriously chaotic, which inspired the end of this play.

The influence of Gilmore Girls is found in all of my writing, both in its focus on intergenerational relationships between women and its fast, witty dialogue. Unbridled is no different.

WHY THE HELL ARE YOU MAKING IT?

We deserve more stories about flawed, complex women, particularly LGBTQ+ ones! Projects that celebrate female friendship — especially the kind that's unexpected, dysfunctional, and funny — are still too few and far between. We're being the change we wish to see in the world here.

OKAY, I'M SOLD. WHERE AND WHEN THE HELL CAN I SEE IT?

Amy Cassandra Martinez is Señora Menendez

Amy was born in San Antonio, Texas to a single parent, Maria. They moved to Monterrey, Mexico, when Amy was 4 years old so she could learn Spanish, before moving back when Amy was 8. Amy lived in San Antonio before moving to Los Angeles in 2015. Amy is also an entertainment host and musician.

MaryKathleen Gordon is Irena

MaryKathleen Gordon, aka Kathy, was raised in Peoria, IL. This Irish Catholic Midwesterner might look like a nun, but relishes playing darker roles. She is warm, yet twisted — a playful Lioness who gets what she wants. Destined to be a character actress, at 14, she played the 40-year-old shopkeeper in Peoria's Community Children's Theatre production of Nicolo and Nicolette!

After graduating with a BA in Theatre from Butler University, MaryKathleen hit the boards, working seven seasons of midwestern summer stock theatre as a triple threat. In '78, MKG took her tap dancing prowess west, where she delighted audiences at San Francisco's Magic Theatre, playing the Buddha Bottom in Minnie Mouse and the Tap-Dancing Buddha. Turning to "serious acting," she attended The American Conservatory Theatre's Summer Training Program in 1979.

Landing in NYC in the early 80s, MKG studied with Greg Zittel of the Neighborhood Playhouse, as she worked steadily in commercials. Known as the "That Singing Comedienne," MaryKathleen hit the piano bar circuit with her one-woman shows, "Don't Call Me Mary" and "60 Seconds from Sanity." Her off-off-off-Broadway tour de force was as the lead in Nicky Silver's dark comedy, Fetid Itch. Backstage's review stated, "MaryKathleen Gordon carries the entire play in the role of Wilma. She is fantastic, quirky, and unpredictable — a potential comic superstar."

Wanting to do more film and TV as well as live near the ocean and wear shorts year-round, Kathy moved to Los Angeles. There, she felt a longing to become a Mom, and adopted her beautiful baby boy in 2003. Mom is definitely her starring role, as the ups and downs of single parenting have deepened her sense of dark humor.

LA has been very good to MKG, with juicy roles in many major episodics. From the drug-dealing receptionist in Weeds to the grief-stricken Mother in Cold Case, to Giggling Secretary #75 on Murphy Brown, MaryKathleen brings power, playfulness, compassion, and complexity to all her character roles. She is now bi-coastal, splitting her time between LA and NYC.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln with a BA in Political Science and Psychology and minors in Gender Studies and Spanish, she decided to turn her penchant for binge-watching television and scouring the internet for Broadway bootlegs into a career in entertainment.

Her introduction into the industry was a summer spent at Williamstown Theatre Festival during a season that saw revivals of GHOSTS and A RAISIN IN THE SUN, plus world premieres of GRAND HORIZONS, SELLING KABUL, and BEFORE THE MEETING, among others. She came up in Hollywood in C-suite offices at WME and NBCUniversal, following a brief PA stint in rural Mississippi on the ABC series WOMEN OF THE MOVEMENT.

By day, she is a Creative Executive at Adam McKay’s HyperObject Industries, working across both film and television on scripted and non-scripted projects. All other times, she can often be found hiking, playing the Sims, and cheering on a number of ill-fated sports teams.

Bailey Padgett - Producer

Originally from North Carolina, Bailey Padgett made the move to Los Angeles in 2012 after graduating college to follow her passion in filmmaking. Climbing the ladder from Production Assistant to Production Supervisor/Producer, she has successfully made her way in commercials as a freelancer for the last 13 years, working with notable brands such as Nike, Apple, Google, and more.

Craving a shift in 2021, she began working with her creative partner, director/writer Simone Faoro. Their first major short film, titled The Yellow, made its premiere at TIFF in 2024. They are currently preparing to shoot their feature film this year.
