At its core, Unleavened asks: what do we inherit, and what do we carry with us even when we try to grow beyond it? Set over the course of a single Passover seder, the film follows a family navigating unspoken history and unresolved hurt. When a daughter’s tattoo sparks a clash over faith, autonomy, and tradition, the home becomes increasingly haunted by subtle manifestations of the ten plagues, mirroring the emotional unraveling at the table. The film blends grounded realism with symbolic horror to illuminate the lingering impact of generational trauma and the

ways Jewish families negotiate identity in a modern world.

Questions of identity, tradition, and family are often felt most strongly in moments of closeness. As younger generations renegotiate what they carry forward, these conversations surface in intimate spaces where love and misunderstanding exist side by side. Writer-director Raina Jablon brings a deeply personal understanding of these dynamics, using the specificity of Jewish ritual to tell a story that feels lived-in and immediate. The film is driven by a desire to capture a fleeting, recognizable moment: one that reflects how families today struggle, connect, and continue.

The funds will be directed toward the core elements that bring the film’s magical realism to life, including production design, such as practical effects, prop construction, and set decoration, the rental of anamorphic lenses, and the essential costs of feeding and transporting our cast and crew. Anamorphic lenses will allow us to capture rich visual detail while introducing subtle distortion at the edges of the frame, gently unsettling the image as reality begins to fracture. Any remaining funds will be allocated toward film festival submission fees, helping the project reach audiences beyond its initial production.
