The Story
In a city filled with ambition and hollow relationships, this project was born out of our desire to reckon with how to be a good friend when it feels like that no longer is valued in today’s culture, and how culpable we are in that.
UR KILLING ME will be exploring the theme of friendship. For young people just out of college, your friends are your family...Except without the unconditional love. So how do you tolerate the people in your life you can’t live without, but want to kill? And what’s harder? Tolerating them? or realizing you might just be the problem?
When AMANDA gets promoted to run the Friendship Column at Fizzy Issue (think Buzzfeed but with pastels), she has her three best friends, CHRISTIAN, MADDIE, AND LEILA, over to celebrate. Throughout this dinner though, as her idiosyncrasies and successes in life grate on them more and more, they reveal that they don’t like Amanda at all—they hate her. In fact, they want her dead. With Amanda outside of the room, they all vow to plot her murder. Christian, Maddie, and Leila then come up with hair-brained schemes to get rid of Amanda. They vary from digging holes, sicking a rabid but lovable racoon named Albert on her, and having a little too much fun at an office Christmas party. But all of the attempts have the opposite effect—Amanda now has a boyfriend and a large following on socials due to all of the trauma she has survived. No matter how hard they try, their friend is just no match for them!

The characters in this series go on this same journey, albeit through three convoluted attempts at murder. But as dramatic of a reaction this may be, we feel this highlights the quieter notion that no one is completely likeable or completely not likeable, and all we can do is accept people in that gray area. For everyone who annoys us, there is someone we annoy. There’s both relief and growth in that, and we hope that it’s a lesson people can apply not just to friendships, but all aspects of their life.
Meet Amanda: Prime influencer type. The queen bee of queen bees. Her compliments always manage to have a critique in them. She really is trying to be a good friend, but she can't help that she's better than you.
Meet Maddie: The ultimate hater. But let’s face it, she says what you’re thinking. Loves you, but fantasizes about killing you. She and Amanda met when growing up on the same block as kids, and the rest…is history.
Meet Christian: The most hopeful out of the group. He’s a great friend and hard worker…at least that’s what he tells himself. He was brought into the friend group after he met Amanda at work, and quickly fell in love/hate with her.
Meet Leila: A mystical, ethereal, good soul who is aware of nothing we know, and everything we don’t. Think Phoebe Buffay if she had a cell phone. She’s the friend in the group who’s always on a side quest. Maddie and Amanda found her on Facebook Marketplace when they needed an extra roommate, and she’s been a witness and victim of Amanda’s doings ever since.
Michael and Sarah are friends who always knew they wanted to write something together. UR KILLING ME was born out wanting to explore the unique time in your 20’s when you love your friends, but you don’t exactly like them. Through this comedic lens they explore how much of that is rooted in dislike for others, or dislike in one’s self. The hope is to let their audience know they’re not alone when coming to terms with friendships ending. The hope is to shed comedic light on this relatable topic, and with everything going on in the world, hopefully UR KILLING ME can bring some light to the darkness, as comedy so often does.
