Mission Statement

Vanilla Milkshake is a female-driven film created by Latin and LGBTQ+ filmmakers telling the story of a young woman's path to self-discovery. She searches for love in a world of over-romanticized relationships and must learn that emptiness is not a lack of love, but a lack of self-acceptance.

The Story

Olivia is a hopeless romantic looking for her soulmate in a world where everyone gets a predetermined “true love" token.  Each token is individualized and starts off cool, but gets warmer the closer you are to "the one". Olivia frequently visits a popular dinner to increase her chances of matching with someone. She meets Aria, the new waitress who is skeptical of the token system.

Aria challenges Olivia’s routine and proceeds to help her meet and flirt with potential life-partners. Aria will introduce Olivia to a world of possibilities she never considered, making Olivia question her faith in the device and her perception of love.

Written & Directed by Ecuadorian filmmaker Dany Flores, Vanilla Milkshake narrates the story of a young woman's journey of self-acceptance, despite the world telling her who they think she should be.

Dany drafted an early version of the script in 2017 and it explored different characters. The main element that remained was the "true love" token system. The hopeless romantic in her loved the idea of the simplicity of an almost systematic world where everyone would end up with their soulmate. But we all know that dating isn’t as black and white as Hollywood makes it seem.

In reality, dating has become a system with apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Her, etc. which makes true romance die a little bit every day. It's easier than ever to reject hundreds of people without a second thought. Even though you’re connected and looking for the same thing, no one seems to be able to find it.

The systematic world that these apps introduce has made dating about algorithms and appearances. There is no room to explore personalities when everyone is dating based on looks and matches. At this time in history, we are the most connected then we have ever been, but people seem to feel the loneliest and isolated from others, losing that social touch.

Vanilla Milkshake explores the story of a young woman looking to fill that emptiness with love. It's a film about finding yourself while being surrounded and pressured by systems that tell you who you should be and have in order to be happy.

Dany got to the point in her life where she had everything but didn’t understand why she felt so empty. Like Olivia, she came to the difficult realization that she didn’t know who she was. She thought she knew what she wanted when in reality she was blindly chasing happiness. Dany wasn’t going to find it until she learned to love herself.

Aria knows who she is and doesn’t need anything or anyone tell her what she wants or needs. She became a mirroring reflection of who Dany has become after finding the answers to an empty feeling.

Both characters tell a different story of Dany's life and how she came to terms with who she really is, without letting what others may think or feel affect her.

People feel the need to fit into specific boxes in order to be accepted. Following the crowd, even if it makes you unhappy, is the trend. When people want to fit in they often settle for someone that may not really be good for them because most people want to find a partner to feel loved, so much so, they miss finding the person that really fulfills and completes them.

Vanilla Milkshake is for all the young people out there who refuse to settle. The ones that dream of something bigger and are passionate about the things they love. Olivia and Aria are both flawed characters who are also loving, witty and charming. Olivia loves and believes. Aria listens and comprehends. They are both young and trying to figure themselves out and help each other in the process.

This story is charming and witty with wonderful characters who deserve to have their story told. The beautiful performances, production design, cinematography, and direction will make it a well-rounded, enjoyable experience that will make YOU fall in love with Olivia, Aria and their story.

Under the production with the team from HOCA Studio and No Usual, we are confident that we will bring you the film that we promised.
