You should support this project because a lot of people can relate to losing a loved one. It's important for someone to see that they will able to heal from loss like Janie does at the end of the film. The film is based on the director's real life experiences with her grandma.

Mission Statement

I'm a type of artist that supports diversity and aims to empower voices that are typically swept under the rug. I like telling stories with meaning where the viewer can take something away from it and can spark conversation and create change. My films are crafted with love, heart and passion.

The Story

Violet is a melancholic drama. It's a story of a young woman dealing with grief and the inner strength she must find. The film shows that love for others and sacrifice is a powerful thing. The team is making it to pay homage to Violet Wade, the woman who meant so much to director Janneke Wade-de Jong. It's really important for Janneke to create a meaningful piece in honor of her grandmother's memory because her grandma was a part of her childhood and Janneke wouldn't be the person she is today without her. The most interesting thing about this project is that it's based on the director's real lived experiences. The flashback scenes are recreations of vlogs that Janneke and her grandma would make in real life. Another interesting part is that the main character will be playing her grandma's favorite song on the keyboard when she visits her grandma's grave. We plan to use the money to buy the props, rent the truck for equipment, get crafty so the cast and crew can be fed on set, to cover travel expenses for the cast and for film festival submissions. We are currently in the pre-production process of making the film. This campaign will help move the project tremendously as it will ensure that we will have the props ready to go, transportation costs covered for cast and also transportation for the equipment using a U-haul truck. It's really important that the cast and crew get fed and that's a big chunk of the budget so this crowdfunding page is essential. When the film project is finished, the plan is to submit it to film festivals, specifically ones that are focused on Black stories since this is a majority Black cast and I'm making this film for my family who is Caribbean heritage. I'd also like to submit it to websites that focus on highlighting short films, such as Short of the Week and Film Shortage who have feature films on grief and loss in the past. A link to the film will be sent to those who donate on September 15th when the final cut is complete. If the project surpasses 100% funded, I will look into submitting into more film festivals and short film websites. Please share my project to friends and family and share on social media to spread the word!

About This Team

The crew of the film consists of UNCW undergrad and grad filmmakers. We are all passionate about film and storytelling and each have a unique style that when working together we will create a work of art.

Janneke Wade-de Jong is from New York City and currently resides in Wilmington, NC. She fell in love with filmmaking when she took an IB Higher Level film course where she made short fiction films and documentaries and also got to learn about film theory and film history. She continued her passion for film at Loyola Marymount University where she helped with several student films as grip, sound mixer, boom operator, production designer and script supervisor. She made two short documentaries, one historical short film and one social justice piece about the BLM movement and street art. After graduation, she became interested in the world of film education, working for an after school program called CinemaKidz and working at the Museum of the Moving Image as an educator. Janneke is interested in dipping her toe in the narrative world and expanding her potential as a filmmaker blending her real life experiences into a fictional space. She also hopes that getting her MFA in Filmmaking will help her to be able to teach film at the high school or college level.

Producer bio

Jenny Robertson is from Richmond, VA, and currently resides in Wilmington, NC. She loves random adventures, volunteering, rainy days, thrift stores, little free libraries, and gardening. She has an event planning background and loves a good film festival! She fell into the cinema/television world while working for a disaster relief nonprofit and later as a tv producer… thus she is a sucker for human interest and social justice stories. After working as a crew member on several shorts in undergrad, this film is her directorial debut. Foremost, Jenny looks forward to earning her MFA in Filmmaking. She would like to be a university professor and has enjoyed her time getting involved at UNCW (University of North Carolina Wilmington).
