Story
Mission Statement
With a ragtag cast and crew of folks within the LGBTQIA+ community, the neurodivergent community, and people of color, we’re eager to share our film in hopes of making people feel a little less alone. The film dives into intergenerational trauma, positive/toxic masculinity, and friendship love.About The Project
Walter, Grace, & The Submarine is a film about two young, midwestern artists dealing with parental & religious trauma, friendship, and… finding the right person at the wrong time.
(Kyle Patrick and Jessie Carl in a still from Walter, Grace, & The Submarine)
Walter is new in town. Grace is leaving town. After sparking an untimely connection, the two decide to spend one weekend exploring Grand Rapids together before separating. During their adventures, they forge a strong connection by sharing vulnerable stories from their pasts. When suddenly their connection is tested, they must decide how (or if) they fit into each other’s futures.

Watching this film is like watching a memory of a chance encounter unfold before you, almost as if you're opening up a photo album that doesn't belong to you. With that in mind, we specifically worked to emulate the unique quality of film by leaning into photograph-like compositions, color palettes, and lighting -- this subtle nod connects the audience to the story by visually linking them to a motif that circles around the film's central themes (one of our primary characters IS a photographer after all!).In order to most effectively highlight the beautiful production design and cinematography present in Walter, Grace & The Submarine, it is important we work with a professional colorist (a post-production crew member who adjusts and corrects footage, like the preview seen below, to best portray the texture and imagery of the film).
In order to get where we are, the crew has accomplished a lot, like:
- Finalized a 92 page script
- Cast the two best actors for the job
- Hired an amazing DP to bring the film to life
- Hired a production designer who just gets it
- Launched the film's social media
- Crafted the first crowdfunding campaign (which was successful!)
- Locked in over 10 filming locations across the city of Grand Rapids
- Found an extremely talented crew who made this film even remotely possible
- Stocked up on snacks, meals, and other crafty essentials - yummy, yummy
- Prepped the cast and crew AirBnB (the Walter, Grace & the Submarine head quarters)
- Shot for 14 days (15 days straight with 1 day off)
- Took a breather cause that was some hard work
- Edited social media content
- Edited the first draft of the film (current run time - 91 minutes)
- Applied for fiscal sponsorship
- Crafted the second crowdfunding campaign (you're in it right now)
In order to make the best film possible, we are having a second round of fundraising specifically for our current phase of filmmaking: post-production. These funds will allow us to accomplish all of the goals set by our production team, including:
- Hiring a professional sound mixer
- Contracting our composer, Ings, for an original score, as well as licensing her other music
- Covering submission fees for the many… many film festivals
- Bringing on a professional colorist
- Hosting a private premiere for the cast, crew, and generous contributors
- Paying our editor
- Making cool merch
- Et cetera

Although this is not an autobiographical story... it is a personal one.
"I come from a small, conservative town in West Michigan and I also have had the unfortunate experience of being in some romantic “right-person-wrong-time” situations before. With this film, I had a lot of things I specifically wanted to say about growing up in an Evangelical environment, love, friendship, intergenerational trauma, and the ways unhealed trauma affects young-adult friendships and romantic relationships.
This movie is for folks who grew up feeling like an odd duck and who found excitement in discovering like-minded people as we grow into our 20s. It’s about those nights when you stay up until 3 am with your favorite person, talking about stuff you’ve never really told anyone before, laughing till you cry, and the cozy feelings of being truly vulnerable and safe.
Walter, Grace, & The Submarine wears its heart on its sleeve and was written from a place of empathy, humor, and earnestness. My hope for this movie is to provide a little comfort for folks who might relate to these characters so that they may feel a little less alone. Everyone who has gotten their hands on the script has expressed their love for the story, dialogue, and the relatability of Walter and Grace.
That love also extends toward the wonderful indie artist ings, whose songs I featured heavily throughout the script in “needle drop” moments. Sonically and Lyrically, ings always helped remind me as I was writing to stay true to the core messages of Walter, Grace & The Submarine: self-love, self-acceptance, and friendship."
Walter
An art school dropout, Walter likes to draw and write cute stories for a cartoon superhero named SodaMan; he also has an Evangelical Christian dad who built a homemade submarine when he was a kid.
Kyle Patrick (he/him/his)
Though Kyle primarily works on stage and film as an actor, he is a Chicago-based multidisciplinary performer who also produces, writes, and flips through the air as a circus aerialist! Examples of his work can be found on his website, but some examples he’s particularly fond of include You’re OUT!, Subsurface, and Lacy’s Christmas Do-Over. Always a go-getter with an ever-adapting attitude, Kyle started his production company "SoliFilm Productions" shortly after the COVID lockdowns began. Kyle fell in love with Walter, Grace, & The Submarine simply because it has an excellent script -- it's a beautiful and delicate journey into the nuances of human relationships, traumas, and desires, as well as how each of those affects the others. As a character-driven story, the film doesn't rely on convincing you to root for its characters, instead, it invites you to be with them: to celebrate, to mourn, to laugh, to cry, and to long for the spark of humanity - to search for it, then find it...then lose it...then search then find then lose...and on and on and on. Walter, Grace, & The Submarine is, quite simply, an actor's playground.

Grace
A talented photographer, Grace was once part of a conservative catholic community and got married straight out of high school; now, a year after splitting up with her ex-husband, all she wants to do is leave Michigan and her old life behind.
Jessie Carl (she/her/hers)
Jessie Carl is a Chicago-based film actor, singer, brand ambassador, voice teacher, and most importantly - cat lover. Her previous work and current projects can be found at jessiecarl.com – including Movie Theater Massacre, Oxygen Thieves, and commercials for the brand "Drain Betty."
The moment Jessie read the script for Walter, Grace, and the Submarine, she said "I know this is something I need to be a part of." Because of that, during production, she was most excited to bring the dialogue to life – a task that didn't come as a challenge considering how many parallels she found between herself and Grace".

Current Team
About This Team
Like Walter & Grace, the cast and crew are comprised of scrappy, midwestern, 20-something artists who share similar backgrounds and wish to express themselves through their craft. Life is messy, weird, and sometimes miserable - and we think that a romantic comedy of this scale, which channels those feelings, is a good way to show it.
Though our production in Grand Rapids, MI was funded through our prior Seed & Spark campaign, this project was largely a labor of love.
All of the camera and G&E equipment were graciously provided by our Director of Photography, Richard Tran, and our sound equipment was borrowed from Mike Dollar, Sound Design professor at Kendall College of Art & Design.
Based in either Grand Rapids or Detroit, large chunks of the crew were composed of volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to help make the film come to life. Close friends offered up their homes, catered for the crew, and provided their furniture and clothing for the film. Not to mention, several local artists sold or loaned out beautiful works of art as set decorations for Walter and Grace’s apartments. We’re so grateful for everyone who assembled to join the "Submarine" crew, who believed in the project and took the time to pitch in.
Noah Bashore - Writer/ Director
Noah is an independent Writer/Director based in Grand Rapids, MI. He’s also the editor for ‘Just Shoot It’, a popular indie filmmaker podcast. Mr. Bashore (pronounced BAY-SHORE) grew up in the small village of Sand Lake, MI, and may or may not be a film/art school dropout. Walter Grace & The Submarine is Noah’s feature film directorial debut, with plans of continuing to tell modest, character-driven stories that are both humorous and melancholic. Aside from workshopping with his two lead actors, Noah’s favorite experience on set was being able to joke around and get to know his talented crew.Gillian Noonan - Producer
Gillian is a multimedia producer based in Grand Rapids, MI with experience spanning from commercial and promotional work to short films. Under Stoneburner Video she's led projects for the likes of Duolingo, FAYGO, and Buzzfeed - though she finds the most meaning in creating narrative work (but don't tell her clients that). Gillian strives to cultivate environments where crews and talent have the support they need to effectively collaborate and problem-solve - two of her own talents. She notes the meals at the crew Airbnb as some of her favorite memories from set because it's when the team got to let loose and reflect on their hard work.
Rich Tran - Director Of Photography
Rich is a Vietnamese-American dir. of Photography & producer based in Detroit, MI. He has DP’d for clients such as VICE, Food Network, Ford, Discovery, etc. Rich also runs a full-service production company called Cart Pusher Productions LLC where he produces projects for publicly traded companies. Rich takes pride in being one of the very few Asian-American DPs in Michigan and his favorite moments on the set of Walter, Grace & the Submarine were being able to work with a group of Asian-American crew members who are severely underrepresented in the local market.
Ings - Composer
Ings is a composer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. Recent work includes “Stage Kids” (2022 short, from writer/director Lynn Chen), “tiny places for imperfect journeys” (2022 dance film score, from Seattle-based Modern dance company Malacarne), as well as two additional upcoming live dance scores premiering in January and March of 2023 (also for Malacarne).
Formerly based in Seattle, she was a recipient of the following private and public arts grants: Allied Arts Women in Music Grant, two 4Culture Artist Grants, and a Jack Straw Residency. She has also scored educational videos for the Monterey Bay Aquatic Research Institute.
She fell in love with the Walter, Grace, & the Submarine story as soon as she read Noah's script, and can't wait to begin work on the score.
Zachary Thomas - Production/Costume Designer
Zachary Thomas is a Production Designer and Makeup Artist based in Grand Rapids, MI. He has designed four feature length films and dozens of shorts all around the state of Michigan. Zach's makeup work can be seen on projects for Spectrum Health, on professional music videos, and the Athena Awards for the Grand Rapids Chamber. His favorite moments on this project were collaborating with the Director, Noah, and Director of Photography, Rich, to capture the film's beauty and spirit.
Jay Kingman - Illustrator
Jay is just a weird guy with a weird cat based out of Grand Rapids, MI. They graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design in 2020 with a BFA in illustration for some reason. Jay has self-published a handful of comics and zines, participated in local mural projects, and probably done some other things too like hand craft Walter's Sodaman comic book!
