Mission Statement

With a ragtag crew and cast of folks within the LGBTQIA+ community, the neurodivergent community, and people of color, we’re eager to share our film in hopes of making people feel a little less alone. The film dives into intergenerational trauma, positive/toxic masculinity, and friendship love.

The Story

A Midwestern Romantic Comedy written and directed by Noah Bashore, produced by Gillian Noonan, and with music & score by INGS.

Inspired by Walk-And-Talk movies like Before Sunrise and Sh*thouse —

Walter, Grace, & The Submarine is a romantic comedy about two young, midwestern artists dealing with parental & religious trauma, friendship, and finding the right person at the wrong time.

This movie is for folks who grew up feeling like an odd duck and who found excitement in discovering your people as we grow into our 20s. It’s about those nights where you stay up until 3 am with your favorite people, talking about stuff you’ve never told anyone, laughing till you cry, and the cozy feelings of being truly vulnerable.

Walter, Grace, & The Submarine wears its heart on its sleeve and was written from a place of empathy, humor, and earnestness. Everyone who has gotten their hands on the script has expressed their love for the story and the relatability of the characters; building a super supportive and excited group of creators hopping on to help.

We believe in this movie because we believe in romantic comedies. Walter, Grace, & The Submarine dives into the kind of topics, themes, and scenarios we wish to see more of. Movies where young men are loving and openly talk about their feelings. Movies where young women are courageous and supportive of each other. Movies that acknowledge how we’re living in scary times, but are thoughtful and radically optimistic in the face of that.

We’re the people to tell this story because we’re committed to telling a small, sad, yet funny story about being a young person trying to form genuine connections. Although Walter, Grace, & The Submarine is not an autobiographical tale — it is a personal story.

Like Walter & Grace, the cast and crew are comprised of scrappy, midwestern, 20-something artists who share similar backgrounds and wish to express themselves through their craft. Life is messy, weird, and sometimes miserable - and we think that a romantic comedy of this scale, which channels those feelings, is a good way to show it.

This film will be filled with unique photographic compositions, simplistic yet intentional color palettes, and long takes with amusing and heartfelt performances - letting the story shine.

— all accompanied by meditative and soulful music provided by our wonderful and talented artist: INGS.

Walter Moore just moved to the city of Grand Rapids, MI and Grace Nelson is about to pack up and move across the country to Portland, Oregon. After a chance encounter, and over the course of a weekend, the two bond over having odd childhoods, similar senses of humor, and ... not really knowing what they're doing.

Walter is an art school dropout who likes to draw and write cute stories for a cartoon superhero named SodaMan and has an Evangelical Christian dad who built a homemade submarine when he was a kid.

Kyle Patrick (he/him/his)

Though Kyle primarily works on stage and film as an actor, he is a Chicago-based multidisciplinary performer who also produces, writes, and flips through the air as a circus aerialist! Examples of his work can be found on his website, but some examples he’s particularly fond of include You’re OUT!, Subsurface, and Lacy’s Christmas Do-Over. Always a go-getter with an ever-adapting attitude, Kyle started his production company SoliFilm Productions shortly after the COVID lockdowns began. Some of the rom-coms Kyle enjoys include Sixteen Candles, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Ghost. Kyle fell in love with Walter, Grace, & The Submarine because, put simply, it has an excellent script -- it's truly a beautiful and delicate journey into the nuances of human relationships, traumas, and desires, as well as how each of those affect the others. As a character-driven story, the film doesn't rely on convincing you to root for its characters, instead, it invites you to be with them: to celebrate, to mourn, to laugh, to cry, and to long for the spark of humanity - to search for it, then find it...then lose it...then search then find then lose...and on and on and on. Walter, Grace, & The Submarine is, quite simply, an actor's playground.

Grace is a talented photographer who was once part of a conservative catholic community and got married straight out of high school. A year after splitting up with her husband, all she wants to do is leave Michigan and her old life behind.

Jessie Carl (She/Her)

"Hi my name is Jessie Carl, and I am a Chicago-based film actor, singer, brand ambassador, voice teacher, and most importantly - cat lover. My previous work and current projects can be found at jessiecarl.com – including Movie Theater Massacre, Oxygen Thieves, and the Drain Betty commercials. I am an absolute sucker for a good rom-com, and I plan on taking inspiration from some of my favorites: The Holiday, How to Lose a Guy In Ten Days, About Time, and High School Musical (it’s a classic)

The moment I read the script for Walter, Grace, and the Submarine, I knew it was something I needed to be a part of. I’m most excited to bring this dialogue to life – a task that won’t come as a challenge considering how many parallels I’ve found between myself and Grace already. There’s literally nothing about this movie that I’m not looking forward to – except for kissing Kyle Patrick?!?! EW?!?! (Just kidding?)"

We are currently in pre-production and are working towards locking down partnerships with Grand Rapids businesses as we’ll be filming in multiple restaurants/storefronts and want to highlight local business.

With plans to film on location throughout the city, we have to cover travel and housing costs for our amazing cast and crew. With people coming from Chicago and Detroit, we want to ensure everyone is comfortable and well fed. Additionally, in order to film at iconic Grand Rapids sites any local would recognize like the Calder Plaza we have to pay rental and insurance costs.

Other expenses include talent payment, costuming and set design, music licensing, and preliminary post-production costs which are crucial to creating a cohesive aesthetic and feel for the film; we want our audience to be immersed in the conversation between Walter and Grace. Lastly, to ensure the physical and emotional safety of our cast and crew we will be providing COVID PPE. It is crucial to us that everyone has the space and resources to feel supported and excited while on set creating.

About This Team

Noah Bashore - Writer/ Director

Noah Bashore grew up in the small, rural village of Sand Lake, MI, and is based in Grand Rapids. He’s a writer/director, photographer, wannabe “niche internet micro-celebrity” on TikTok, and podcast editor for the indie filmmaker show ‘Just Shoot It’. Mr. Bashore (pronounced like BAY-SHORE) has wanted to make a romantic comedy since he was kid due to his older sisters raising him on that genre and is excited to make a scrappy yet charming first feature with his buds. His favorite romance movies are the Before Trilogy and When Harry Met Sally.

Gillian Noonan - Producer

Gillian is an up-and-coming multimedia producer based in Grand Rapids with experience spanning from commercial and promotional work to short films. She’s excited to put all the different pieces together to create this film and get it into the world to enjoy. Her favorite rom com (and movie in general if we’re being honest) is She’s The Man. If you ever meet Gillian, make sure to ask for her favorite quote; some options include “does she have your number? 1-800-beotch,” “my favorite’s gouda” and “end of discussion; end of relationship,”

James Knowles - Production Associate

As a Merchant Taylors Alum and a graduate of Salford Universities Film Production course (1st Class with Honors), James has always gravitated toward the art of filmmaking. He has produced 8 short films, 2 of which are award nominated; Hollywood Verge Film Festival Best Short Film Nominee and the BECTU Future Filmmakers Festival 2019 Selection, and one award nominated screenplay for the Hollyshorts, Screenplay Contest. He has proven to be tenacious and determined starting his own successful production company Entity, through which he has worked with international clients such as TEVA Pharmaceutical Limited, the world's leading general pharmaceutical company, and more locally a commercial for the Salford Rum Company, and Skinny Tonic. He is Entity's Head of Production, James is currently based in London and working as a Production Assistant for major studios such as Sony, HBO and Apple TV. My favorite RomCom is How Do You Know? starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson.

Rich Tran - Director Of Photography

Rich is a proud Asian-American creative who grew up in Grand Rapids, MI. Now Detroit-based, Rich works across the Midwest in the TV/commercial space in various roles within the camera department. Some of his favorite romance films are Colombus, Once, and 500 days of Summer

Ings - Composer

Ings is a composer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. This is her first feature length score. She has scored work for Stage Kids (unreleased short film, from writer/director Lynn Chen) and the Monterey Bay Aquatic Research Institute. This July, she re-released her debut album Lullaby Rock on tape through Ghost Mountain Records. Included with each cassette is a kit to build a Calder-style mobile, which she fabricated by hand. She was blown away by Noah's script and can't wait to work with this whole crew.

Zach Thomas - Production/Costume Designer

Zach Thomas is a Production Designer and SFX Makeup Artist that is based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since graduating from Grand Valley State University, Zach has continued his work in the art world of film and video production working on shorts, features, and commercials. His all time favorite rom-com is You've Got Mail.

Jay Kingman - Illustrator

Jay is just a weird guy with a weird cat based out of Grand Rapids, MI. They graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design in 2020 with a BFA in illustration for some reason. Jay has self-published a handful of comics and zines, participated in local mural projects, and probably done some other things too. Their favorite rom-com is Shrek 2, obviously.
