The Story

Ways to Go is a story about two old friends, Devin and Stacy, who happen upon each other after years apart. They now live in a post-apocalyptic world and they each find comfort and familiarity being back together again. Their separate journeys brought them together but they have to decide if that paths continues together or they continue on their own way.
Devin has been hiking from Burlington, VT trying to get back home to his family in Washington, DC. Society collapsed so quickly, that he doesn't know if his family is still alive. Along his journey he runs into Stacy, an old friend from high school. They reconnect and find that they a comfortable and relaxed together; the familiarity is comforting. But will that be enough to tempt Devin to stay and give up on his quest to get back to Washington DC?
This project is coming together at a time of, seemingly constant, uncertainty in the world. We've been through several "once-in-a-lifetime" events over the last decade or so. That uncertainty & constant change can make you think about the past and the choices you've made. We all think about different choices - financial, personal, professional - but we all wonder about the path not taken.
Two and a half years ago my daughter was born. During some of the late, sleepless nights I thought about all of the little decisions through my life that lead me there: where my family lived growing up, where I decided to attend college, what jobs I had taken or passed on...so many decisions making an impact where I was in that moment. That's where the germ of an idea for this script started.
That idea grew and changed and finally made its way on to the page as Ways to Go.
The script is written and the cast is set. We're locking in crew now and barreling our way toward filming at the end of October in the Peekskill, NY area. We have a great team coming together (check out The Team tab above to meet everyone!) and know that we're going to make something special - and have fun doing it!
By joining our team here on Seed & Spark you'll be ensuring that we'll be able to make the best film possible! All funding will cover:
- Day-to-day expenses (lunch, van rentals, liability insurance, etc.)
- Cast & crew rates
- Gear rentals
- Film festival submissions costs
There are lots of incentives to thank you for being a part of our film. Most importantly, you'll want to see it! Everyone in the "Friend" level and above will receive their own digital copy of the film once it's completed. Other incentives allow you to get tickets to a local screening of the film or even be a part of the film by becoming a "Sidekick."
We have a great start, but with your support as part of the film, we will be able to make this project even better and help share the story with the world. We'll be screening at festivals all over the US and (hopefully) the world, but if we go above our fundraising goal, we'll be able to budget for a marketing plan and package to send out to distributors.

Two projects that have inspired some of the look for the film are Station Eleven and Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Both are amazingly told stories and ones that have stuck with me. The book for Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel is a masterpiece in its own right and the show brought it to life in an amazing way. The story weaves the story lines of many different characters together through several different timelines. I doesn't focus entirely on the disease that caused the end of the world, but rather the humanity and love that can bring us together when we've lost all else.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire, directed by Céline Sciamma, is another masterful story about two women who are slowly falling in love. Their relationship is taboo in 1770 but their connection is undeniable. Their relationship is cut short but their time together shapes the rest of their lives. It's a great film beautifully shot by Claire Mathon.

Some other projects we love / inspire the look of the film:

This is where you come in! We're looking for funding help to bring this story to the big screen. Funds will go toward securing locations, paying cast & crew a fair wage, equipment rentals, post-production costs, and film festival submissions. We understand that times are tough (strikes, inflation, child care costs!) so if you're unable to financially donate, your willingness to share our project with others is appreciated just as much.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our project. Independent films like Ways to Go are only possible thanks to the support of people like you.
