Dysfunctional siblings Lily, Alex, and Freya just lost their dad. What follows is a very chaotic, frustrating, and somehow comedic funeral. This short highlights the importance of family, shows how people grieve differently, and is ultimately an attempt to bring a bit of relief to the subject.

Mission Statement

This family is one that almost everyone will be able to relate to, as no one really knows what they're doing, especially after a tragic death. The film aims to offer comfort to those with complicated families, hopefully starting meaningful conversations among siblings.

The Story

Lily and Alex are left alone to greet guests next to their father's casket. After realizing it's not very fun, Alex goes to find an aebleskiver pan and Lily breaks down. After a few messy moments, they finally get to talk to each other about their grief.

This is a family in which almost everyone will be able to see themselves, as it's very complicated, and no one really knows what they're doing.

The film's tone will be funny, but it does get sad. We feel that the best movies are those that hook you in with a laugh and end up breaking your heart with some wisdom about life, or in this case, death.

We've made short films in the past, but nothing as ambitious as this one.

We Gather Here Today is a short film, but it's still going to cost more than us broke college students have. What we lack in money, we make up for in spirit! And also in skills that we've acquired through years of experience in film, documentary, and media production. Our core group of Corey, David, and Ethan founded Cut The Deck Creative in 2021. cutthedeck.co is our portfolio if you want to check that out.

Your funds will be used to pay our amazing talent & crew, get us the right equipment to do the story justice, submit the film to festivals, and design a beautiful set.

If we raise more than our goal, we will be able to do a lot with it, such as renting a higher quality camera/lens kit, hiring a composer, buying more expensive flowers, supporting our crew better, and so much more.

Although We Gather Here Today has hints of a comedy, death isn't really funny.

It's something that everyone has to deal with, and that sucks. This short shows how different people react to this fact, and it's ultimately an attempt to bring a bit of relief to this subject.

Maybe it will make siblings appreciate each other more. Maybe parents and their children will see each other in a new, refreshed light. Maybe you and your family have gone through a recent death and need a reminder that it's ok to still laugh.

We feel great about where we're at with our pre-production, but need money to fulfill our budget.

As stated above, we need the money to pay the people involved, rent equipment, submit to festivals, and design our production. These get expensive.

Speaking of festivals, we are looking to submit to Sundance, SXSW, Wisconsin Film Festival, Beloit International Film Festival, Atlanta Underground Film Festival, TIFF, SIFF, and more depending on how much is raised.

We have every shot, every sound, and every beat meticulously planned to capture exactly how the emotions should play out.
