Mission Statement

We Interrupt This Program explores the complexities of dealing with dissociation and media escapism, By taking an environment and having it manipulated by the beautiful campy woman on your TV. We begin to question am I the problem or is reality just boring?

The Story

After receiving a mail-in ad for a TV that promises an escape towards peace and freedom, Birdie, a woman struggling with dissociation and Intrusive thoughts, orders one hoping to clear her mind.

Later that night as she gets home she receives the package, sets up the TV, and starts to get ready for bed.

The TV turns on by itself and starts playing vague and creepy commercials all featuring the same TV announcer.

The announcer reveals themself to be The Castress; A dark femme figure that targets people who refuse themselves and forces them to face their carnal truth.

The Castress takes Birdie and forces her to face the uncomfortable truth regarding herself and all of her thoughts. They Do this by taking Birdie through her house and manipulating all that is familiar to her, testing the and reflecting limits of her mental psyche.

Birdie

Birdie is a 22-year-old woman who is struggling with disassociation and trying to deal with the void that is reality. She is holding back a whole other side of her, Refusing to let it out fearing what she might do.

The Castress

Is a Dark Femme figure they are an Anti Hero who takes different forms inside of the TV and strives to show Birdie the raw truth behind her disassociation and her thoughts. She is able to manipulate all of Birdie’s Surroundings now that they are in Birdie’s home and all They want is for Birdie to accept and release that chaos

We Interrupt This Program is a film that comes from various forms of media and some of my own life experiences.

It is a mixture of everything I love about all of my subcultures, and interests, as well as the look and feel of some of my favorite films.

The Outrageous nature of the film was inspired by The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Videodrome, and Pink Flamingos

However, I want this to have a mentally emotional tone that was inspired by Girl Interrupted, Donnie Darko, and The Craft

There will be a clear visual separation between Birdie's world and The Castress's world, Birdie's reality will be a dark somber tone and visual. There will be grungy yellows, greens, and stained whites up until the colorfulness of The Castress's world begins to seep into Birdie's.

The look of this film draws inspiration from the different eras of film and women actors, In The Castress's world (her TV) she is able to manipulate the look and feel within her and Birdie's realm. The various looks you will see are inspired by Old Hollywood 1920s glamour, 70s-80s colorful and campy slasher films, and The dark seductive look of 90' grunge films.

There will be a lot of texture to some of the shots to give them the comforting yet ominous grain of a CRT TV, as well as the usage of Fish-Eye lenses and High-Angle shots to give the viewer the illusion that they are watching Birdie through the TV or a Security Camera.

We have plans on having a large Art team to make the visuals as lived-in as possible, The Setting of Birdie's house will look like it stepped foot out of a 70s movie with a Maximalist approach. We also have been looking for Locations in Mesa, Arizona with houses that were built in the 70s to make the job a little bit easier for our production designers!

We Interrupt This Program comes from the heart of a Queer person of color, I have developed a personal story of enjoying things that may often be seen in a negative way. My love for outrageous humor, campy movies, and disturbing horror movies where the female lead is a little bit too crazy are completely up my alley and that’s what I plan on bringing to this movie.

This project's mission is to show off the powers of Campy Media. Often times Camp is seen as tacky and weird but it is deeply rooted in story, theatrics, and Queer Culture.

I hope to inspire and thrill those who watch because at the core of this story of Analog, Color, Thrills, and Oddities is Young Me. I was never able to find a label for myself as a youngling, and to this day I have yet to find a single one that is able to hold as much power and creativity as I do. I was heavily inspired by Drag Queens, Movies that are Campy and Queer, and things that have been labeled as Gay, Weird, and not normal, Things people often look down upon but at the heart of all of those words is Expression.

Our Planned shoot date For this Film will be the first week of November 2023, and Post-Production will begin in January of 2024.

Supporting this project is supporting and believing in the dreams of a diverse group of filmmakers as they make their way through their senior year of college. As well as supporting the representation of Queer films and Camp in media.

This Project is heavily inspired by some of my own experiences of discovering and connecting with Queer Culture as well as dealing with mental illness, as I was coming to terms with my Identity.

We are so excited to begin the journey of making this film a reality but we are going to need a lot of help from you!

We hope you consider contributing to this project and supporting our senior capstone film. Anything helps bring us one step closer to making this film a reality.
