Using non-linear storytelling techniques, When Summer Ends follows the progression (and devolvement) of Danny & Eli’s relationship as financial and artistic struggles slowly pull them farther apart. As Danny begins to find success in her acting career, she must choose between her ambitions and Eli.

Mission Statement

Our mission with this project is to provide an opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration between the film, theatre, and TV communities at Emerson College — communities that have historically remained decidedly separate.

The Story

Danny and Eli are two nobodys living in their hometown when they impulsively decide to move to LA together. After arriving, our lovers are forced to confront the reality of their decision — will they let their constructed world crumble, or embrace the facade?

Having grown up in rural Virginia, the opportunities for youth with an interest in filmmaking were, without hyperbole, non-existent. The closest I could come to participating in any kind of storytelling was through my high school theatre group. It’s within this group that I discovered my passion for live performance.

Since entering Emerson College, I’ve been, quite honestly, disheartened by the lack of interdepartmental collaboration. A campus culture of isolation has fostered an environment where students with diverse interests don’t even bother to step outside of their own department since they will certainly be met with endless restrictions.

This project aims to change this by providing a space where students from all disciplines — film, theatre, TV, marketing, and any other special interest can participate. Everyone has a place in this project.

Jonathan Kirkpatrick

Writer/Director, When Summer Ends

Tone: Our main focus is building tension through magical realism, blurring the lines between performance and reality, theatre and film.

Approach: Due to the multimedia nature of this project, we have film, theatre, and television departments all collaborating to bring this vision to life. Our wide-ranging crew makes our approach of consistent communication even more important in creating an efficient and professional production environment.

Danny Joy is an aspiring actress who doesn’t know who she is. She is fickle in all her matters of her life except in her acting, where she remains stagnant. This often complicates her relationship with Eli, forcing her to learn what it truly means to perform.

Eli Thatcher is a charming photographer with big dreams and empty art. He’s very observant and reflective to a point of excessive anxiety, but often bites his tongue in fear of provoking Danny. It seems he would rather keep up the facade than let Danny go.

We aim to raise $2000 in our first campaign in order to secure and develop the necessary locations, production design, and equipment to faithfully tell this story. We are a crew of wide-ranging talents and experiences all bound together by a passion for unique storytelling and an eagerness to bring this project to fruition.

Live performances will run and be recorded through a weekend in March 2026. Performances will take place in Boston, MA. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event.

There will be an additional screening of the fully edited film at the Emerson BFA film screening in early May 2026. The screening will take place in Boston, MA. The event is free and available to the public, though seating is limited.
