The Story
Far out in space, a man comes to terms with his fate at the end of the road, he wonders if God is watching and waiting for him beyond the dark...
Or something else.

What is Who Art In Heaven About
Who Art in Heaven is a cosmic horror short film set far in the future aboard the Exodus, a spaceship left drifting endlessly through the vacuum of space after a mysterious epidemic wipes out most of its crew. The halls of the ship have been abandoned to rot, consumed by silence, decay, and the lingering remains of those who once lived there.
The only survivor is Marcus, a humble and deeply faithful man mourning the recent loss of his wife and unborn child. Completely alone aboard what has become a ghost ship, Marcus is forced to confront not only isolation but the terrifying collapse of his own mind.
As time passes, the sickness reaches him. Marcus has already witnessed what it does to people, including his wife. Flesh slowly erodes away, leaving behind holes as black as the void outside the ship. The infected begin hearing voices that do not exist, losing their sense of self piece by piece until nothing remains but an empty husk. Terrified of suffering the same fate, Marcus decides he would rather die on his own terms than become something unrecognizable.
At its core, Who Art in Heaven explores a fear larger than death itself. Rather than asking what it means to be the last man on Earth, the film asks what happens when you are completely alone in space, unreachable by anyone, carrying faith into a darkness that no longer feels human.
The title Who Art in Heaven is a reinterpretation of the “Our Father” prayer, transforming it into a question. It asks not only what may exist beyond us, but who is truly listening from the darkness above.

What is Cosmic Horror?
Cosmic horror, often associated with the works of the infamous author, H. P. Lovecraft, is a subgenre of horror centered around humanity’s fear of the unknown. Rather than relying on traditional monsters or violence, it explores isolation, insignificance, psychological unraveling, and forces far beyond human understanding. What has always fascinated me about cosmic horror is its ability to render our existence terrifying. The genre is not simply about fear of death, but fear of discovering something so vast and unknowable that it completely reshapes your perception of your own life.
Why this story matters
Science fiction and horror have always been the genres that inspired me most as I grew up. They shaped my imagination and fueled my desire to become a filmmaker. Yet stories within these spaces rarely allowed Black characters to truly take center stage, especially through the perspective of Black creators behind the camera.
As a Haitian filmmaker, I wanted to create something that felt personal to my artistic voice. While creators from backgrounds like mine are often expected to remain within grounded genres such as drama, romance, or comedy, Who Art in Heaven intentionally pushes into something more psychological, existential, and abstract. The film blends science fiction, religious horror, and cosmic dread into a story about grief, faith, loneliness, and the terrifying possibility that something may be waiting for us in the dark.

The Visual Style
The visual language of Who Art in Heaven is built on the idea that a person's surroundings can reflect their state of mind. As Marcus drifts alone through the Exodus, the ship begins to feel less like a physical location and more like an extension of his grief. Empty corridors, distant lights, reflections, and vast stretches of darkness emphasize his isolation, while silhouettes and negative space constantly remind us of the absence left behind.
Color plays a central role in communicating Marcus's inner world. The cold grays and muted blues of the ship represent his depression and emotional distance, creating a sterile environment that feels frozen in time. These tones are contrasted by the intense orange and red glow of a passing star, which gradually grows stronger throughout the film and transforms the atmosphere of the ship itself. In contrast, memories of the life Marcus shared with the woman he loved are represented through vibrant pinks, purples, and warm natural light. These colors evoke a sense of comfort, longing, and possibility, creating a visual distinction between the reality he inhabits and the life he wishes he could return to. Through light, color, and composition, the film allows Marcus's emotions to shape the world around him and remind him of who he has lost.

Budget Breakdown
At this point, nearly half of the film's budget has already been personally invested into Who Art in Heaven. To bring the project across the finish line and fully realize our vision, we are seeking an additional $10K from our community of supporters.
Our total production budget is $20K, which will cover the essential costs of bringing the film to life. These funds will support cast and crew compensation, construction and rental of our spaceship set, location fees, props and wardrobe, insurance, craft services, and post-production, including editing, sound design, color correction, and visual effects. Every contribution helps us move one step closer to completing Who Art in Heaven and sharing it with audiences around the world.

Why We Need You
Independent filmmaking is a community effort, and Who Art in Heaven would not be possible without the support of people who believe in this story and the team behind it.
More importantly, your support helps make a statement about the kinds of stories that deserve to be told. Science fiction and cosmic horror have traditionally been shaped by a narrow range of voices, yet these genres have the power to explore universal questions about faith, grief, identity, and the unknown. With a Black lead, a diverse cast and crew, and a deeply personal perspective, Who Art in Heaven seeks to contribute something new to that conversation while remaining grounded in the human experience.
We hope this film serves as another step forward for creators of color who want to tell stories beyond the genres and spaces they are often expected to occupy. Our goal is not simply to make a short film, but to demonstrate what is possible when independent artists are given the opportunity to bring their unique tastes, perspectives, and ambitions to the screen. We want this project to encourage other filmmakers to pursue the stories they are passionate about, no matter how unconventional they may seem.
Following completion, we plan to submit Who Art in Heaven to major genre and independent film festivals before pursuing online distribution. Every contribution is an investment not only in this film, but in the future stories our team will continue to tell.

What's Next
Our goal is to bring Who Art in Heaven to audiences through a strategic festival run focused on science fiction, horror, and psychological genre storytelling. We plan to submit to festivals such as Fantastic Fest, Fantasia, Sitges, Overlook, and Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, while also pursuing opportunities at festivals that celebrate Black filmmakers and stories, including the American Black Film Festival, BlackStar Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival, and Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival.
Following its festival run, our long-term goal is to premiere Who Art in Heaven on DUST, the leading platform for independent science fiction storytelling. Sharing our film with DUST's passionate community of sci-fi fans and creators has always been a major aspiration for this project.
