Maybe what the world needs is a screw-up! This comedy highlights the importance of how empathy, levity, and buffoonery can turn our deepest darknesses into the greatest light. On behalf of our team and of our lord, The Booze, we thank you in advance for donating!

Mission Statement

Our pilot aims to explore the common worries of the world: Am I a good person? Can I be forgiven? Can I forgive others? We hope to squash these worries with our light-hearted, witty portrayal of a modern day prophet— to remind the masses that life is only as serious as you make it.

The Story

Wine to Water follows Ryan, a down on his luck screwup who can't seem to ever say or do the right thing. Following a bad performance (and an even worse attempt at damage control), he has no idea what to do but to turn to the bottle for comfort.

When he wakes up post-blackout and is suddenly regarded as a hero, Ryan realizes he's been blessed with a special gift: The power of The Booze. With each sip of alcohol, he gains mysterious insight into the lives of those around him, enabling him to embark on missions aimed at bettering his community. Will he use his power for good? Or will he crack under the pressure of being a modern day prophet?

This comedy explores what it means to forgive. At what point is redemption futile? With absurd situations and even more bizarre characters, we look at this question in an extreme, but unserious light.

We're hoping this pilot highlights how it's possible to do the right thing— even if you don't have all the answers, and similarly, do the wrong thing— even if you do have all the answers.

We live in a time where it's common to scrutinize mistakes: whether it's your own wrongdoings or others, getting caught up in placing blame and holding grudges has never been easier. Empathy is powerful, and you never know if your forgiveness and compassion will be what drives someone to turn their life around. Our pilot encourages everyone to love thy neighbor, thy community, and also thy drinks.

Let There Be Light:

Give us the gift of lights, sound, and camera equipment so we can capture our miracles as well as possible! This category of our budget covers necessary film equipment packages and other technical production needs.

Our Daily Bread:

It's going to take a loaves and fishes kind of miracle to feed our cast and crew! Help us make sure everyone is well taken care of on set with the gift of crafty.

Adornments:

To bring this world to life, we'll need some help. This fund will be to make sure our costumes and sets match our (and Ryan's) visions.

To Write the Scrolls:

Unfortunately, The Pope wasn't able to include our script in the Newest Testament. Our next plan is to submit it to film & tv festivals this upcoming season! This part of the budget will help cover those costs, and also enhance our post-production process.

Divine Intervention:

Just in case the devil finds us on set, we want to make sure we're covered. We're budgeting $669 for insurance, holy water, and any other unexpected fees that come up in production.

We appreciate each and every blessing that you can extend to our project. This pilot wouldn't be possible without you, and we could not be more thankful for your help in getting this story off the ground. The magic of The Booze is in each and every one of us, and we can't wait for you to see how Ryan utilizes his.

About This Team

This original pilot was written and developed entirely by students at The University of Texas at Austin. We all connected to tell this story in thanks to the Texas Student Television Incubator Program: an organization dedicated to supporting young creatives in getting their stories off the ground. The program is in current partnership with the ATX TV Festival, and we could not be more thrilled for our hard work to premiere this May at The Paramount Theatre!
