The Story

An old couple passing by arm-in-arm. A group of friends laughing as one trips on his shoelace. A nervous girl and brazen boy brush hands on a first date. From the inside of a car-window, a young man watches, alone.

When a just-turned-21 Carlo is dragged along to the club by his well-meaning if overbearing single mother, Alessia, he does his best to use the liquor and musk of the club to come out of his shell for once. Unfortunately for him, his WingMom's overprotective tendencies make a shocking appearance, leaving Carlo stranded on the side of the road.
What does it mean to find love, platonic, romantic, and familial as we come of age? And what does family mean when it is broken, flawed and not what we think it should be? This film takes an absurdist premise and explores deeply universal themes through the very specific premise of a mother and her son at the club.

The WingMom team is an ecclectic bunch that is truly diverse in identity. Despite this, the dysfunction of a parent-child relationship, the absurdity of coming-of-age, these are all things that are universally relatable to us. Without lingering too long on any specific identity dynamic, or focusing on specific themes, we are hoping to tell a story that is fundamentally human and fundamentally relatable. For us, WingMom represents a comic, meta-take on the way that good storytelling is universal, and that dysfunction, when represented correctly, can make us all feel seen.
In WingMom, Pablo has mixed various experiences of his own with those of his best friend’s to create a piece that depicts an adult coming of age tale in a less-than-usual scenario (aka. at the nightclub alone with your mom and aunt). Yet, the nuance of a familiar tale within a new context can hopefully reveal a fresh story about human nature.

A key visual feature for WingMom be the eyelines of Carlo and of his mother Alessia. The attention to their subjective gazes will pose our film’s questions, which we intend to answer with the composition and framing of the subsequent shots. This technique will be forefront in the visual style. The film’s visuals speak on their own - with the ambience of nighttime exteriors and the bold evocative lights of interior nightclubs.
Though the film deals with the very real and emotional aspects of parental relationships in non-traditional households, the film takes an absurdist spin, attempting to find the comic side in it all. Following this, the film will oscillate between grittier, realist styles and a less self-serious one, emphasizing the slightly odd premise of the story.
Some visual references include The Great Beauty (2013) by Paolo Sorrentino

and Atlanta (2016-2022) by Donald Glover

Both serve as visual references for the type of cinematic style that Wingmom intends to use.

Following the launch of our crowdfunding campaign in early February, our team will be casting, having rehearsals, revising, and location scouting in February. Once location and cast has been fixed, we will spend the beginning of March on test shoots, set dressing, lighting trials and on-set rehearsals in preparation for production. Currently, our team is in the process of finalizing scripts, cast and organizing rehearsal times.
Production itself is scheduled for the last week of March, from March 28th - April 2nd. The film production will happen in New Haven, CT, where the majority of our own team’s personal coming-of-age stories took place. A large portion of our production cost will come from utilizing authentic spaces to capture the sweat, anxiety and excitement that the story intends to capture.
Following production, our writer-director Pablo will be working hard to get the film in shape for festival submissions. As this film will serve as Pablo's own senior thesis within the Yale film major, there is a guarantee that you all as contributors will see the product of your generous contributions!

In order to make this film a reality, our team is aiming to raise $7,000 in funds through this campaign. Because of the ambitious nature of the story's location and premise, we need your help to make this happen. Though we would be over the moon to just make our goal of $7,000 we obviously would be thrilled to overshoot it!
Having more funds would allow us to compensate the amazing people we’re working with. The nature of student films often means having collaborators work for free, and it would be amazing to set a professional tone by properly compensating our crew and talent. Additional financing would also help fund scoring, post production costs, and festival submissions. Finally, it would allow us to recruit more extras, upgrade our set dressing, and enhance lighting to capture that perfect confluence of hormones that is the coming-of-age club scene.

About This Team
Pablo Causa, Writer/Director
Pablo Causa is a senior at Yale majoring in Film and Media Studies. Born to a Danish violinist and Italian violist, his journey in art started with music. Later, high school was a time of transition to theatre while at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven. However, filmmaking was always a passion he cultivated throughout his life. It all started with making iMovie Trailers for fun with his younger sister. Years later, during Spring 2021, he took a semester off to partake in a student film group known as the Foothills Film Collective (foothillsfilm.org) to create 6 short films and firmly committed to filmmaking. Since then, he’s worked on various projects including Incoherence (dir. Emily Rodriguez); The Moon, The Sun, and The World (dir. Zoe Sinclair); Nate and Li (dir. Ryan Zhou); and more, predominantly as an actor. Now, Pablo is beyond excited to return to the role as writer and director for his 3rd short film after Luck? and Callus.
Clara Park, Producer
Clara Park is a senior at Yale majoring in English literature. The daughter of Korean immigrants, she always assumed she would go the filial route and go to law school with her English degree until her COVID year off landed her at a production company in South Korea. The whirlwind of a year following lead to a production credit on International Emmy award-winning The King’s Affection, and an unshakeable curiosity in where else storytelling might take her. She is very excited to be working on this project with such a talented group of creatives.
Diana Campos, Director of Photography
Diana Campos is a senior at NYU Tisch School of the Arts where they are studying Film and Television Production and Cinema Studies. Born and raised in Northwest Arkansas to Mexican immigrant parents, Diana Campos focuses on utilizing film as an avenue to exemplify and navigate the complexities of identity, especially for marginalized groups. She is very excited for the opportunity to work on this project!
Alan Lin, Assistant Producer
Alan Lin a writer, director, and cinematographer studying English at Yale University. His love for cinema began with his purchase of The Simpsons Movie on Blu-Ray at the age of 7, and he has never looked back since.
