Mission Statement
My mission as a social impact filmmaker is to create woman driven content that creates dialogue around issues happening in our world. We're recruiting a team of women/nonbinary crew to help tell the story of WISE LOVE. Art & film can be used to share various perspectives on how we see the world.About The Project
Dana Wise grapples with the emotional ups and downs of taking care of KJ, her 19-year-old son, who has recently been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Her love allows her to ignore the severity of KJ’s illness until he has a violent outbreak that puts his life in jeopardy. Dana, then makes an extreme, unconventional choice to help save and protect her son from himself. However, that choice could ultimately change their lives forever.
Dana Wise, a former real estate agent is now a stay-at-home mother who loves her teenage son, KJ, unconditionally. Dana and her husband, Kevin, have struggled to protect their son from the dangers he presents to himself and others as a result of his mental health challenges. Over the course of the film she comes to believe that because of her undying love and the desire to protect KJ she must take drastic measures.
Writer, Director Tomeka M. Winborne has created this film to bring awareness to the trauma and mental health challenges caregivers often quietly experience while caring for their loved ones. Tomeka’s mission as an African American filmmaker is to bring stories to the screen that embody the experiences and voices of people of color that are often overlooked by the mainstream media, including social issues.
- Caregivers must care for themselves so that they can better take care of their loved ones.
- Often we focus on the people suffering from mental illness (or any illness or disabilities) but we don’t think about the sacrifices and needs of the caregiver.
- There are resources available to help caregivers balance and tools to make better decisions about the care of their loved one as well as themselves. (e.g. therapy, medicines, support, etc)
- There is a dramatic toll and impact on the mental health of the caregiver.
- Highlight some of the ways caregivers put themselves in harm’s way when de-escalating the violent outbursts of their loved ones during a mental health crisis.
Tomeka M. Winborne, Writer, Director and Producer, started her film journey in 2009. Winborne decided to make three short films as her film school; it gave her the opportunity to learn and make mistakes. After exceeding her goal by directing five short films, Winborne is expanding her cinematic creativity by becoming an episodic TV director and feature film director. Winborne is the Co-Chair of the Alliance of Women Directors South and Chair of the Alliance of Women Directors Black Directors Advancement Initiative. She’s also a member of Women of Color Unite, Glass Elevator and Brown Girls Doc Mafia. Winborne loves traveling, dancing and exploring foods from various cultures.

We want to raise $16,000 at this stage of production, but we have stretch goals! By helping us to achieve our stretch goals we'll be investing everything we raise back into the project.
If we raise $18,500 we'll be able to commit to catering and craft services for our crew.
If we raise $21,000 we'll be able to commit to ensuring full covid compliance for our set.
If we raise $23,250 we'll be able to commit to hiring a stunt coordinator.
If we raise $26,000 we'll be able to commit to renting a more expensive camera package (which will make our Director of Photography very happy).
We can also commit to paying our Director, Producer(s), editor and interns a significantly reduced rate for the time and creativity they've already given to our project. (Currently they're generously sacrificing their time and talents by working many unpaid hours to make this project happen).
