Mission Statement

I am going to make my senior capstone short film. It will happen. You cannot stop me. I am so blessed to already have the support of so many friends helping me on this project and the material support of my college. The final piece of the puzzle is keeping everyone fed and housed in the process.

The Story

Two U.S. Forest service personnel are tasked with disposing of their old mascot costume, Twigs The Turkey. When they improperly dispose of the suit we find out why there were strict protocols in place. (It's alive and is coming back after them.)

Grand Marais MN is my hometown and it is a supremely weird place. An hours drive into the woods we have a giant magnetic monolith sticking out of the ground but most locals appreciate it as a great place for picking blueberries. We have a waterfall that splits in two, with half of the flow disappearing down a hole to god-knows-where. But again most of us appreciate it for having one of the best swimming spots just down the remaining half of stream. In my short life I have heard of or borne witness to Bootleggers, Cults, Murders, Alien Worshippers, Cryptids, ball lightning, Ghosts, voices, spirits, carnivorous moss, wicked rip-currents, and the best damned fish and chips in the lower 48. All without sufficient explanation.

People flock to The North Woods for its natural beauty or to run a vacation rental; not because of its particularly thin metaphysical insulation. The people that actually make their own beds and don't lock their doors along this stretch of highway 61 are, generally speaking; a well-meaning, reserved, and capable scattering of artists, red-necks and red-neck-artists who have yet to compare notes and conclude that, at one point or another, nearly everyone has left their window cracked and heard things they wish they hadn't or found notes from long dead relatives in yesterdays leftovers.

I was lucky enough to grow up in this environment and I want too make a short film that captures some of it's humor and magic.

  • Kelly Harris Plays Joey. Joey is feeling tossed around. He's a new recruit to the Department Of resources Forestry Initiative Station no. 427. It's literally his first day. This whole world is new to him and no ones even explained when pay-day is. We ARE getting paid right?

  • SJ Olson plays Glen. They're the youngest old-timer you will ever meet. They were born into the town of Devils kettle. Molded by it. They know it like the back of their hand. They are utterly bored with it and only a little resentful of the situation.

  • Audric Buhr Plays Rusty. The Head Ranger. It's a small team out here so he's got to wear a lot of hats. Boss, father figure, medic. One day, God willing Glen will take over. But that comes with additional, mysterious responsibilities. The kids just not ready.

am so lucky. So dang lucky. I have access to a network of equipment through my friends and school.

My Actors are generously giving their time to be a part of this project.

I wrote a "research grant" through my school and obtained $1700 to buy a professionally made mascot costume.

So many of the things that ordinarily drive up the cost of a production are not even a factor here.

Unfortunately there are still a few big expenses that are unavoidable.

still have to worry about:

Housing,

Food,

Off-Grid Electricity,

Data Storage,

Any money donated goes directly into buying these four things. Any extra goes to the Fees associated with submitting the finished project to film festivals.

The Project is shooting in March and due to release in June. Backers will get to see early.

This world has been bouncing around in my head for so long. Thanks for helping me get it out.

One day (fingers-crossed) I get to make more.
