Hey, I'm Annalise!
San Francisco, California
I'm a documentary filmmaker (Looking for Leia, The Whistle, MAJOR!, Diagnosing Difference), psychotherapist, and consultant based in San Francisco. My work focuses on decolonizing the documentary filmmaking process by centering participants as key collaborators in storytelling, and critically challenging the ways director/producer/editor roles can serve as extensions of systems of social control. My work is informed by the principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, a psychological qualitative research method which seeks to explore how individuals create meaning and understanding of their own experiences. I'm interested in stories of racial and gender justice, and how targeted communities use resilience as a form of resistance.
I'm a trained psychotherapist with Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology and work in private practice with individuals, couples, and multi-partner relationships on issues of sexuality, gender, and intimacy.
MAJOR! (2015) was the recipient of 20 Best Documentary awards, including the Outfest LA, InsideOut Toronto, and Queer Screen Sydney Audience Awards. My work has been made possible with grant support from the Arcus Foundation, Horizons Foundation, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice and Transforming Justice / Tides Foundation.
Other good things to know about me? Queer. Chihuahua enthusiast. Star Wars fangirl.
