Hey, I'm Janice Rhoshalle!
Los Angeles, California
My current feature, Those People: A Love Story, was selected by the DreamAgo 2016 Plume & Pellicule international screenwriting atelier. Previous versions of the script progressed to the second round at the Sundance Labs and Austin Film Festival screenwriting competitions. My work-in-progress documentary project,“…But Can She Play?”: Blowin’ the Roof off Women Horn Players and Jazz, was awarded by the Black Female Jazz & Fine Arts Awards in 2015 and 2014 for efforts to bolster support for jazz women instrumentalists through film and media. I am a Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities fellow.
Prior to my foray into filmmaking, I have had an extensive career as a journalist and am currently a senior editor for Los Angeles Review of Books. My work has been published by the Associated Press, and has appeared in numerous periodicals including the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Zocalo Public Square, BOAT Magazine, Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News In Style, Vibe, Essence, Ebony, Movie Pilot, Paste Magazine and Emmy (the official magazine of the Television Academy), among many others.
I am the co-author of Swirling: How to Date, Mate, and Relate Mixing Race, Culture, and Creed (Atria, 2012). I've contributed to the art anthology Reflections: A Collaboration between Painting and Literature (Pochino Press, 2014) and served as editor for All About the Benjamins: Helping People Create Sustainable Wealth in the Midst of Financial Uncertainty (M. Perry, 2010).
In my spare time, I serve on numerous boards, and am longtime member of the Journalism and Women Symposium, and Women, Action, and the Media: WAM! in Los Angeles, and am a member of several film associations.
