The Story
When Sophia’s grandmother was alive, Ama (阿媽) was the best cook she knew. Every time she visited during a school break, she looked forward to family gatherings and especially the food her Ama made. However, when Ama developed dementia and eventually passed, Sophia realized just how much of Ama’s history and recipes she never thought to ask about before they were gone. What followed was a lingering regret of not taking advantage of the time and learning more Mandarin/Taiwanese to connect with her grandparents before it was too late.
阿嬤在世時,是張詠慧最棒的廚師。每次放假回家,她都盼望著家庭聚會,尤其期待阿嬤做的飯菜。然而,當阿嬤患上老年癡呆症並最終離世後,張詠慧才意識到,阿嬤留下的那麼多她以前從未想過要問的家族歷史和食譜。隨之而來的是揮之不去的遺憾:沒有好好利用這段時間,學習更多普通話/台語,以便在一切都太遲之前與祖父母建立更緊密的聯繫。
That regret is the catalyst for A Little Bit Sweet, a feature-length documentary exploring family history, Taiwanese food culture, and the search for connection.

While visiting her grandparents in Taiwan for the last time, Sophia was surprised to learn something new: a part of our family still in Taiwan make a hot sauce (BB 辣醬) known throughout the country. Thanks to generous crowdfunding and friends, Sophia brought a small team to Tainan, Taiwan to capture the stories behind the beloved 70+ year old sauce company, finding more than just food alone.

On the surface, A Little Bit Sweet is about a family business in Taiwan that's been creating sauce for generations, Tainan cuisine, and Taiwanese culture.

Underneath that, it's about something many of us in the Asian diaspora carry with us without always knowing: the urge to ask where we come from. This documentary is for anyone who's ever wondered, for the children of immigrants, for those trying to decipher what gets passed down and what disappears. It's also for the elders who lived these stories, building something from scratch, and who may never have realized that these experiences deserved to be told.

Sophia J Chang is a second-generation Taiwanese American filmmaker, food stylist and photographer, whose career in food and media reflects her deep-rooted passion for storytelling and culture. Sophia has worked on Food Network TV shows and commercials with clients including Bibigo USA, King’s Hawaiian, Knorr, and Starbucks. A Little Bit Sweet is her first feature documentary.

Alan Chung is a Taiwanese American cinematographer specializing in short films and travel videos. He has previously worked on videos with companies such as Netflix, Walmart, and Toyota. He has also collaborated with artists including Uncle Roger, Wang Lee Hom, and Wong Fu Productions.

Shaminder Dulai is a second-generation Indian American filmmaker, photojournalist and 13-time Emmy-nominated director, editor, writer and producer. His films explore "home," identity, belonging and power, often centering underrepresented voices. Dulai previously served as Managing Editor for NBC Left Field, Global Director of Photography and Multimedia at Newsweek and Newsweek Films and Head of Original Programming at Cascade PBS.

She was also featured on Netflix’s Somebody Feeds Phil with Phil Rosenthal.
