Mission Statement

We are a female-driven team passionate about showcasing the nuances of being an immigrant in this world with a touch of humor. In our film, our strong and witty female characters encounter some serious obstacles but with some help (and some sass) they learn to heal and find joy in life again.

The Story

Inspiration

This film is inspired by our director's journey from India to America. She came here at the very impressionable age of 10 and although she was extremely grateful and excited for this new opportunity, she couldn’t help but feel like she was losing a part of herself, the Indian part. She knew that her relationships with her friends, family, and community back in India would never be the same again. Vaishali, the main character in our story, uncovers similar feelings and thoughts as she deals with the loss of her childhood home.

Purpose

We want to create a film that showcases the nuances of being a South Asian woman. There has been a rise, albeit a slow rise of South Asian representation in Hollywood but for individuals of Indian descent where we have more languages than states in India and more dialects than countries in the world, representation is not a one-size-fits-all bill. Therefore, by creating a film about an American Marathi family with funny and stubborn women, we want to contribute to that ever-growing diversity.

Additionally, with the universal themes of courage, love, and happiness we hope everyone can relate to this film. If not, at the very least we hope it puts a smile on their faces.

Style

Here is a mood board for the film:

The technical aspects of this film are inspired by some of our favorite shows and films. The pacing of the film is inspired by the quick and witty delivery of the mother-daughter duo in Gilmore Girls which contrasts the subtle but dramatic tones inspired by movies like Monsoon Wedding and Lady Bird.

The visual style is inspired by movies like Wedding Season, Indian Sweets & Spices, and Lady Bird. The visual theme is an eclectic combination of colors and patterns that is grounded and simplified by the natural aesthetics of the Pacific Northwest.

Synopsis

Vaishali and her family have to move out of her childhood home, a task that slowly becomes more difficult for her to complete because there are too many metaphorical and physical boxes for her to pack and unpack. Amid her inner turmoil, she fights with her mother while her father and brother are of no help. To top it off the family's realtor has an emergency that in turn forces Vaishali to give a tour of her home to a potential buyer. The buyer is mainly interested in the technical details whereas Vaishali can only remember the quirky anecdotes of her house. In short, Vaishali only has a very small window to complete all her tasks and sell her family's house!

Characters

  • Vaishali Kadam - A curious and sensitive young woman who learns to handle the changes in life with the help of her family and a bit of humor.
  • Mom (Vrinda Kadam) - The motivated, lively, and concerned mother of Vaishali, who seems to be the only family member with a sense of urgency.
  • Dad (Anjay Kadam) - The laid-back and humorous father of Vaishali, who loves his family but dislikes conflict.
  • Abhinav Kadam - The silly and caring older brother of Vaishali who will only do what he is asked.
  • Sammy - The stoic but invested potential buyer of the Kadam house.

We need to hit 80% of our goal ($6800) for Seed&Spark to green-light our campaign!

Stretch Goals

Even though this is a passion project we believe every individual that contributes their time to this project should be compensated. Therefore, all funds will be used to produce, edit, and distribute the film. The initial goal of $8,500, will help cover the production costs for a multi-day shoot in Bothell, WA. Every donation counts, no matter the amount! If we happen to surpass the initial goal, we will use the extra funds in the following ways:

  • $12,500 will help us cover the cost of hiring editors, getting the audio professionally mixed, and having the film professionally color-graded
  • $13,500 will help us cover the cost of submitting to film festivals across the world
