“Ending The War On My Body” takes us through the depths of body dysmorphia in this series of experimental short films. We follow various characters as they see themselves negatively reflected in fragments and learn, through some horror, how to break the mirrors that cage them.

Mission Statement

We desire to end the wars waged on bodies, whether they are decades in or before they have had a chance to begin. Our diverse team aims to get under your skin in a way only art can. We invite you, our audience, to wave the white flag and come home to your body.

The Story

Poetic short films explore the violent—
silent war
waged on the body.
If women break the mirrors keeping them captive
do the horrors remain?

How would it feel to come home to your body?

My name is Katherine McClintic and I have ended and am still ending the war on my body. The path to recovery from a life of body dysmorphia, disordered eating, and negative self-image has been non-linear, and I am making a banquet of art as a salve - a feast for all bodies who desperately need to be seen as wholly beautiful exactly as they are.

This topic is vital to address now as the aesthetics of the 90s and Y2K eras make a sneaky comeback and social media acts as a double-edged sword influencing young people's self-perception more intensely than anything we've seen in human history.

Whether you are decades into the war with your body, or it has barely had a chance to begin, I invite you to wave the white flag and come home to your body with me through these poetic short films.

Experimental films set to poetry

This series of short films is set to poetry from my book “Ending the War On My Body”.  Each film will feature original music by our brilliant composer, Tim Corpus, and is directed by a team of women (Monica Arsenault, T.S. Evering, Lizzy Bryce) living in a variety of bodies who bring their own experiences to the screen.

Each film uses dance and visceral storytelling to unpack body dysmorphia and perfectionism from a different angle.

Below is a peek into the brilliant ideas of these women that you can help make a reality!

The Great Tyrant

Director: Paige Cowen
Concept: Lindsey Bristol

About: A young girl and her cozy home are deemed imperfect by tyrannical hands giving the home a thorough, menacing white-glove check.

The Mirror

Director: Monica Arsenault
Script/Concept: Monica Arsenault

About: A young woman's meditative ritual of putting on her morning makeup turns sinister as she attempts to achieve perfection after she realizes she's being observed by three male photographers.

Prisoner of War

Director: T.S. Evering
Script/Concept: T.S Evering

About: An influencer who preaches body positivity finds herself trapped in an abyss of unhealthy habits.

i don't know what i look like anymore

Director: T.S. Evering
Script/Concept: T.S Evering

About: During what was supposed to be a normal Saturday night hanging out with her girlfriends, a young woman struggling with body dysmorphia begins to lose touch with reality.

(I Broke Them)

Director: Lizzy Bryce
Script/Concept: Lizzy Bryce

About: In this horror and poetry-inspired short film, a dancer, plagued by the menace of perfection, is haunted by a ghostly twin, which stalks her through the ballet studio's mirrors.

Is that my body?

Director: Monica Arsenault
Script/Concept: Monica Arsenault

About: A young woman washes off the traumas of her self-imposed negative body image in a moonlit bath. In an effort to break free from the prison of her reflection, she escapes into a daydream of uncensored joy and natural beauty before returning to the bath with a new perspective on herself and her body.

We need your eyes, ears & financial help!

This is an all-hands-on-deck project.

The book was the first stage of this project and began development in 2020. It is currently in its final print proofing stages and is set to come out in the Summer of 2022. Anyone who gives to the films gets early access(or included access) to the full poetry collection.

We are currently raising funds for 5 of the 6 short films! The Great Tyrant was filmed in October 2021 and has given us a blueprint for what can be accomplished for the rest of these films.

We plan to film in July and move immediately into post-production. Our post-production team is already on board and ready to go.

The filming and post-production are where we need your financial backing in order to get these ready for you to see by the end of the year.

In November 2022 the films will premiere in NYC at Gibney: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center.
We'll be hosting an evening of art centered around "Ending the War On Our Bodies"

Most of the budget is going towards personnel(Yay!), which includes the cast, crew, and creative team.

If we make our goal and move into our stretch goal of $40,000 we will have more room for specific, visual design. Our stretch goals will help make our production designers' dreams come true because they can purchase, make and properly repurpose supplies for things like costumes, prosthetics, and sets.

Should the premiere or filming be postponed for COVID-19 or other factors beyond our control we will notify our audience every step of the way.

Everything is co-created and crowdfunding is a beautiful example of that!

When artists and communities support each other it holds larger companies that hire creatives accountable.

Pledge to our campaign and co-create this project with us! We'll add all our backers to a special list where you can vote on decisions we are making throughout the life of the project.

Safe sets are creative sets

Keeping the bodies of our team safe and healthy
is the most important thing to me and my team.

I don't take this lightly as I signed a contract with this project at the very beginning promising to "Do No Harm" to my body in the process of making Ending the War On My Body, and this extends to the rest of the team as well.

Physical safety regarding risks still posed by COVID:

  • We have a COVID compliance officer budgeted into each day of filming who will enforce and oversee all safety measures and make sure we are in compliance with SAG's COVID safety guidelines applicable in the summer of 2022.
  • We are filming in the summer to mitigate additional risk for surges and new variants.

Nourished bodies and minds lead to safe sets:

  • Cast, crew, and creatives will have every opportunity to be well-fed, hydrated, and nourished throughout the process.
  • To prevent injuries dancers, actors and anyone who needs warming up will have time to perform before being asked to perform physically.
  • Anyone with additional disabilities will be accommodated in accordance with their needs.

Emotional and psychological safety matter:

  • No missed sleep that we have in our power to prevent
  • Additional time breaks as needed and when feasible to avoid undue stress
  • All concerns regarding safety will be thoroughly listened to with action plans in place as decided on by the team and led by the person with the safety concern.

Your financial contributions directly help to create safer sets!
