The Story

From Thanksgiving dinners riddled with raised voices to birthday parties that end in slammed doors, family tension is familiar to even the most relaxed of us. The dynamics can be as complicated to navigate as the Mariana Trench. Through this film, we aim to put a magnifying glass to them, catching the light perfectly to cause some heat... and maybe a flame or two.
Inspired by films like The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) directed by Wes Anderson, Shiva Baby (2020) directed by Emma Seligman, and Little Women (2019) directed by Greta Gerwig, comedy will meet karma in this contained, yet out of the box ride of a film.

Led by matriarch KATHY – jaded cigarette mom with her ambition buried with her divorce papers...
Oldest daughter LUCY – restlessly diligent, excessively uptight, and determined to execute the perfect funeral for the man she’s idolised her whole life...
Younger brother THEO – a 21st century nomadic wanderer who crashes on a different couch every night..
And his twin sister RORY – moving through life without ever really participating in it, trying to run away from all this bullshit...

Led by MICHELLE and her three prodigal daughters...
Chanel covergirl LOLA...
Modern hippie VERONICA...
And architectural digest lesbian ALEX (who's in a complicated relationship with her childhood-sweetheart-turned-adopted-half-sister...AKA Rory. Go figure.)
The two families, previously estranged, reunite for their shared father George Allard's funeral. As the funeral unfolds, Lucy finds Lola’s eulogy – riddled with bitter remarks about her father. When she refuses to let Lola read it, 15 minutes of food-throwing, table-bashing, snack-stealing, name-calling, cigarette-fire-inducing chaos unfolds. But through it all, there’s also intimate confession – a realization that family isn’t chosen but forged through moments of shared love and grief and joy.

Much like the Allard-Yang and Larson families, Eulogy is a big film with a big personality...exploring some big themes.
Eulogy is an Asian film that refuses to be stereotypical or restrictive in any way.
The Allard-Yangs are a chain-smoking, angry, bold, witty family who yell and banter and aren't afraid to use their voices. As Chinese filmmakers, Emma and Jiayun wanted to combat monolithic narratives in mainstream film & TV by crafting subversive Asian characters who aren't shoehorned into any roles. Characters that surprise and provoke and make you fall in love with them. That you remember beyond them being just Asian.
Eulogy is a film about complex women told by women.
Our core team consists of four girls who want to see more stories of realistic, multifaceted women. In Eulogy, seven women congregate at different stages of their life – as mothers, as daughters, as lovers, as students and CEOs and ex-wives and stepsiblings. Produced under the female-led company "ur girlfriend's favorite films", Eulogy aims to highlight these subversive and underrepresented perspectives from an authentic place, giving you a bold ensemble of female leads unlike anything you've seen before.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, Eulogy is a universal story about FAMILY.
Growing up spread over two continents and two cultures, I'd argue with my own family A LOT. I always thought there was something wrong with us, since no one around me seemed to yell or clash the way we did. But seeing the inner lives of families on the big screen showed me that my family wasn’t broken – simply human. That mourning and celebrating and arguing and fighting were really signs that we cared about each other.
We want to celebrate families in all their tumultuous glory, showing that beyond cultural divides, personality clashes, and the things we struggle to forgive – love endures. Eulogy explores reconciliation not as a tidy resolution, but as a complicated, ongoing, but ultimately rewarding choice.
In a world so divided, we aim to unite your dining room table, and remind people that family is all we have- no matter how broken, stubborn, or chaotic we may be.

Eulogy will be shot on an ARRI Alexa Mini living on a Steadicam. Not for visual flourish, but to live and move and grieve alongside our families, dipping in and out of their heads. With long one shots, we aim to play with perspective, placing the audience inside the emotionality of each character as they move around each other.

As we access each character's innermost thoughts, there are slo-mo sequences, a smoke-stained cigarette fire, and a high-concept argument in a closet set build that closes in on itself. Then, as the chaos wraps up, we return to natural light, uninhibited movement, and sweeping wides of the sacred cathedral space where George's coffin lies.
All this will be executed by a team of highly accomplished USC and Chapman students and graduates that are passionate to tell this story and share it with the world.
We are more than a team – we are our own family.

The budget for Eulogy is thoughtfully designed to ensure every aspect of the production is supported while maintaining financial responsibility. Every detail has been carefully planned to bring our vision to life, from supporting our talented cast and crew to securing the tools and resources needed to craft a visually stunning and emotionally resonant film. We’ve also included a contingency fund to cover any unforeseen expenses, ensuring we stay on schedule and deliver a polished final product.
Location ($4,600): Our beautiful location- a world built from a chapel, a house, and a sound stage.
Production Drives ($1,672): Where we store everything and back it up once, twice, thrice...
Lights ($2,100): Along with other unforeseen equipment expenses...
Production Design ($600): Creating an authentic, immersive world.
Transportation ($250): Meals and transportation to keep our hardworking team energized and on the move.
Sound ($690): Immersing not only your eyes in the story.
Wardrobe ($500): Bringing these characters to life.
Insurance ($1500): Keeping everyone and everything is safe.
Contingency ($1,764): To always have a plan B.

Eulogy is a deeply personal story, and we are committed to being mindful and intentional about where we submit this short. Our team has already been recognised in a diverse slate of festivals, including SIFF, deadCenter, Austin Film Festival, LA Shorts, and more. We want to continue this legacy by submitting this film to places where it will be truly seen—festivals that champion underrepresented voices and have created space for stories like ours. We’re not just submitting a film; we’re opening a conversation, building a bridge, and inviting people to experience a world they might not otherwise know.

If we exceed our funding goal, the additional support will go towards better compensating our cast and crew, and improving production quality.
Become part of the Eulogy family today—we can’t wait to make this movie with you.

If we don't raise a minimum of 80% of our Seed&Spark funding goal, we won't receive any of our funding.
Creating Eulogy is a labor of love, but bringing our vision to life requires your support.
