The Story
EXUVIA is a coming of age story about a 90s teenager who can't afford the dress she wants for the first day of high school but finds a way to get it despite her best friend's disapproval.
I have wanted to make this film ever since Andie Tursi, a screenwriting student of mine, wrote this in my class five years ago. The story feels like a throwback to the classic shorts of Lynne Ramsey and Jane Campion (SMALL DEATHS, GASMAN, and PEEL). Those shorts had a profound effect on me as a filmmaker. Their simplicity and power are unmatched. I see the same potential in this story about a teenager discovering that she is not as powerless in the world as she thought but there are potential consequences to using that power.
In some ways EXUVIA feels like a cousin to GIRLS ARE STRONG HERE (my previous short film, available here). They both have teen characters stepping into new versions of themselves. Callie (GIRLS...) stands up to her mother and her mother’s abuser and Izzy (EXUVIA) embraces her maturity and uses it to her advantage.
We'll be shooting in Philadelphia for 3 days at the end of August. Of course, shooting a film in the age of COVID-19 comes with its own complications and safety concerns, so we will be closely following all local regulations as well as taking our own precautions. All members of the cast and crew will be vaccinated and masks will be provided for all indoor locations.
Once post-production is completed, the film will go on the festival circuit where we hope to play in major film festivals around the world (like GIRLS ARE STRONG HERE) and eventually end up on a streaming service like Amazon, Netflix or Vimeo.
We're looking to raise $15,000 to get us through production but hopefully more to get us through post-production and onto the festival circuit. Your support will cover everything that goes into making the film. This will include travel and pay for cast and crew, locations, meals, equipment rentals, etc.
ALSO if you would like to support the film in any other way please reach out. That could be providing food or even a location. And feel free to forward this on to friends or people who might have a particular interest in some aspect of the film—the Philadelphia location, the coming-of-age story, or filmmaking in general.

About This Team
Director: Scott Burkhardt
Scott Burkhardt is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of the Arts where he received an MFA in Film. He was a Dean's Scholar at Columbia and received support for his work from New Line Cinema, the Milos Forman Foundation, The Caucus Foundation, and the Carole and Robert Daly Foundation. His thesis film, The Assastant, won multiple awards at the Columbia University Film Festival and went on to be nominated for a Student Academy Award. The film aired on PBS and Hulu for five years. His latest short film, Girls Are Strong Here, won the 2021 Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Short at the 2021 Independent Film Festival Boston, screened at festivals around the world, and was recently nominated for a Humanitas Prize. His next short film, We Buy Houses, is currently in post production and scheduled to play festivals in 2023. Scott has written for television (NBC’s Smash) anddeveloped projects for NBC Universal, CBS Studios and Flower Films. He is currently working on various writing projects and teaches screenwriting and television writing at New York University, Killer Films/Stony Brook and the University of Pennsylvania.
Writer: Andie Tursi
Andie Tursi is most interested in projects that explore the intersection of art and technology. She spent 12 years as a writer for development marketing and communications at the University of Pennsylvania, contributing articles, speeches, film scripts, web stories, and more. She now leads marketing and communications for a Philadelphia-based geospatial startup. Andie holds a BA from Villanova University and two Masters degrees (MLA and M.Phil) in creative writing from the University of Pennsylvania. A long-time member of The Rittenhouse Writers Group, her fiction writing has appeared in literary magazines including Apiary, Rock & Sling, and in the anthology The Best Short Stories of Philadelphia 2021.
Producer: Vadim Egoul
Vadim Egoul was born in Kazakhstan and raised in Philadelphia. He directed, wrote and produced the short film WICKS, which won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Short at the 2021 Coronado Island Film Festival and played at other festivals across the U.S. His latest short film, LOOKING UP, is a coming-of-age story of a Russian immigrant teen in mid-2000s Philadelphia. While the short is being submitted to festivals for 2022-23, he is developing the story into his debut feature film. Vadim also serves as a co-leader of the Manhattan chapter of the nonprofit independent filmmaker collective, Filmshop.
Co-Producer: Erin Brennan
Erin was born in Michigan and raised in Melbourne, Australia and Shanghai, China. She is currently a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, where she coordinates several short film productions a year as President of Bent Button Productions. Her films SKIN and NIGHTCALL played at high school film festivals across the country, and she also assistant directed Focus International Film Festival and Venice Shorts official selection SMOKE BREAK. She most recently worked with Philadelphia high school students to produce their short film SHALLOW POCKETS.
Casting Director: Tara Culp
Tara Ann Culp is an actress, producer and casting director. She produced FUNNY BUNNY which won the Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival and has been the casting director and producer on numerous award winning short films.
