The Story

Our story follows Ba, a weathered Chinese prospector, and his American-born son Win as they dig for gold on a barren claim in the Sierra Nevada.
Their uneasy bond is defined by contrast-Ba's stoicism and constant compromise, rooted in Chinese tradition, clashing with Win's individualism and hunger to belong in America. Just as they uncover gold, their activity attracts a passing crew of three white miners, who make a dubious offer of partnership.
As tensions rise underground, an impulsive and paranoid Win must make a choice–whether to inherit Ba's values or surrender to the darker temptations of the American Wild West.

In the mid-19th century, tens of thousands of Chinese immigrants crossed the Pacific, chasing the American promise: work, riches, and the hope of a better life. They carved railroads through mountains and dug into the earth for fortunes that were never theirs to keep. They were subject to discrimination, exploitation, and violence, and yet they persisted, built communities, and found a place in a land that was often hostile toward them.
However, over time, these stories have long been lost, and many media or fictional pieces have struggled to give voices to these historically rich and marginalized narratives.

Westerns are cool and we never see Asians in them. Or at least not in the roles that they deserve. That changes with us–a crew of young AAPI filmmakers and actors who are determined to reshape our cinematic representation.
Our characters Win and Ba are ghosts of one of the richest and most fundamentally important historical epochs that led America to become what it is today. But indeed, they are ghosts. As is every other Chinese immigrant labourer on gold mountain and the transcontinental railroad. There is no primary record of any of these people. We are a team of immigrants and children of immigrants from Asian descent and it is our responsibility as artists with a voice to tell stories that do justice to those upon whose shoulders we stand.
Heaven Rewards the Diligent is not a film where Asian Americans exist solely to showcase violence and racism. Yes, that is inherently part of the context in which our story exists, but we want to intimately examine the relationship between a Chinese father and a first generation son as they diligently hack their way towards a dream lodged in a seemingly unfindable corner of a dark cave. Their conflicting worldviews, shaped by the environments and cultures from which they come, clash throughout the film. It’s an intimate and personal struggle that most of us still grapple with today. Resentment. A desire to belong. Pride. Tradition.
Heaven Rewards the Diligent aims to do justice for the ghosts of our history, represent Asians in a genre where we rarely get to take center stage and most importantly I hope that we tell a story that our community can resonate and grapple with deeply.

Starring Benjamin Ting (Left) as Win and Jun Kim (Right) as Ba.

We are shooting in a real, historical cave mine in New Jersey.
We are deep in pre-production, ramping up for principal photography in late April. We aim to complete post-production in early 2027.
The goal is to bring Heaven Rewards The Diligent to festivals across the US and Asia, to reach the right audiences that can help us bring a feature-length concept to life.
Our dedicated team has completed intensive prep. Our actors are cast and rehearsed. All we need now is the right financial support to actualize the work we've done!
