Mission Statement

I tell stories that I want to see in the world that I enjoy while giving the visuals and edits purpose and helping subtly tell this reflective story. We as a team come from different lives and interests and that improves the influence of the film and turns it into something that can impact others.

The Story

Director's preface

Reaching out to others for help is certainly something I struggle with. I want to do everything by myself and not bother anyone even if I am struggling. This project is my method of reaching out and coming to terms with my hesitance to ask for help. I grew up always wanting to entertain people giving others things to laugh at or helping them feel better. I pushed myself and my own happiness and well-being aside for that one pursuit. Now I am going to need a lot of help from both my crew and you to help make this film possible. I am reaching out to you for help in making this stranger's film come to life. My team and I would be forever grateful for any support of any amount, even just sharing this with other people to see and get the word out would be amazing. Thank you for helping a stranger -Spencer Judd

HELPING A STRANGER is a drama about a young homeless man named JACK who is taken under the wing of an older man named LEWIS. They form a father and son relationship, but not all relationships work out. They bond and get to know each other by getting food at a diner, playing a bit of golf, and playing a hand or two of poker. Both of these characters have lost loved ones that they were very close to. Everyone deals with loss in different ways and sometimes it isn’t always positive.

The story takes inspiration from films that involve father and son type films like Hard Eight, Gran Torino, Honey Boy, The Road, and Boyhood.

Who is Jack?

JACK is a young homeless in his early twenties. He has been struggling to find a permanent place to live going from couch to couch or wherever he can find for the night. It has been about 5 years since the wildfire destroyed his home and claimed the lives of his parents. Times are getting harder for him as he takes the little he has left around the town working odd jobs and trying hard to keep going but there is little hope as there is no help other than the assistance of kind people who go out of their way to help him like friends and strangers.

Who is Lewis?

LEWIS is an old retired cop in his late sixties. He is a successful man that tries his best to help his community in any way he can through his actions when he was a cop and now he donates and volunteers at the food bank. He has three sons, one from his first wife that passed away, and two more from his second wife. He lives in a pretty nice home in the neighborhood that he rarely visited when he was still on the force. He is proud of all of the actions he does and the things he has. He only wants the best and believes he does the best work.

The Look and Style

The look of the film will take inspiration from plenty of films but with one particular for how faces will be composed and expressed on the screen will be inspired by Persona. There will be a focus on objects and people with the camera acting like someone examining everything like a large microscope. There will be soft moves that will add to the tone of the film. Playing with composition and image structure using various techniques such as framing, negative space, golden ratio, and leading lines.

I was born and raised in Mesa, AZ. I always loved making things and I started experimenting with film at an early age by making rough lego stop motions with a VHS camcorder. I want to tell stories I enjoy and hope others do too. In the future, I would love to be at the point where I can help other people tell their stories too.
