Mission Statement
The Story
Hybridia is a podcast for conversations about hybrid identities. Hosts Kirby Chen Mages and Saki Sato are biracial friends who met many years ago in art school but never really discussed their backgrounds. After the Atlanta Spa shootings in 2021 and the beginning of the Stop Asian Hate Movement, they were experiencing grief and confusion about how to process this tragedy. They found solace in talking to each other about these feelings and learned a lot about their shared experiences as “hybrids,” and decided to create the Hybridia podcast in order to continue these conversations with others.
In the seven episodes we’ve recorded so far, we’ve discussed themes such as assimilation, how hybridity plays into our creative pursuits, making peace with never knowing the “whole story,” child rearing and raising, insecurities around never being “enough,” and what it means to find yourself in a constant in-between.
The first season of Hybridia has seven episodes, including six guest interviews. We need funds to have these episodes edited and mixed and we plan to release them in early 2025.
We also need funds for our second season, and various other costs related to producing this podcast (all of which can be seen in the "Wishlist" tab).
Your support is crucial to the success of the Hybridia podcast. At least 80% of our goal must be met in order to keep the funds we raise.
Thank you for your help!
Saki & Kirby
We're two biracial friends who share an infinite curiosity and a desire to talk with others. We seek spaces where people can engage in thoughtful, imaginative, and unexpected exchanges.
Saki Sato was raised by a Japanese immigrant father and a white American mother from Georgia. Her parents met at the University of Georgia. Saki grew up on Long Island, NY and now lives in Ridgewood, Queens.
Kirby Chen Mages was raised by a Chinese immigrant mother and an Ashkenazi Jewish American father from Illinois. Their parents met at the University of Illinois. Kirby grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and now lives in Los Angeles, CA.
Saki and Kirby met in New York City, where they both attended The Cooper Union School of Art.

When we started having conversations about what it means to be hybrid, we sought out examples of similar themes and found the subject matter was more common in film, TV, essays, and literature. While there were certain podcasts we could relate to and enjoyed listening to, we felt there was a much needed space for the type of dialogue we were having and we couldn’t find it elsewhere. That’s why we decided to create Hybridia – a podcast about hybrid identities.
We want Hybridia to reach as many people as possible. Podcasts are a free and easily accessible platform, and they're the perfect format for a long-form conversation. Having Hybridia freely available to the public is core to our mission.
The podcast format also provides a malleable container where we can experiment from episode to episode. Some Hybridia episodes might be straightforward interviews, while others may be a more free-flowing roundtable discussion. The possibilities within our themes are truly endless -- as is the world of Hybridia.
There are few spaces where people are able to share and hear stories that focus on personal experiences of intersectionality. As mass media sources continue to try and siphon us into niche echo chambers, we want to provide a place for cross-cultural conversations that celebrate difference and challenge preconceptions around the often limited ideas of diversity.
While we bear witness to borders being contested, resulting in relentless war and genocide, Hybridia is an ever-evolving, shapeshifting, and borderless zone. With each episode the mind map of Hybridia grows. We invite our guests to contribute a location to the map based on themes we've discussed in our time together. In this way, the map serves as a collective container to hold the varied landscapes of the conversations that take place during our show.
For example, "Assimilation Alley" is a location we came up with in our first episode when we interviewed each other and learned about how trying to fit into the pervasive cultures of our respective suburbs played such a huge role in both of our adolescences. And in our episode with Morgan Võ, we chose the imaginary location we call "The Yearning." The Yearning is a place that represents the longing to know and the desire to belong, both of which we talk about in depth in that episode.
Your contributions to our campaign will help us fund our podcast in the following ways:
$5,400 - editing & mixing previously recorded episodes for season 1
$5,400 - editing & mixing future episodes for season 2
$850 - print material and marketing
$500 - travel costs
$300 - space rental for the Hybridia launch party
$150 - web-hosting to maintain www.hybridia.net
You can see more info about these items under the "Wishlist" tab
$10,800 is our bare minimum to produce our first & second season of Hybridia. If we stretch beyond our goal, here's what the funds would go towards:
$11,800 would cover our marketing and web hosting costs.
$12,600 would provide us with a budget to host a live event in New York City.
$14,000 would allow us to build out our website as a resource library.
$16,000 would help us host more live events and travel for interviews.
$20,000 would provide us with enough funding to invite and pay for celebrity guests in our upcoming season.
Hybridia will launch on podcast streaming platforms in early 2025 with our newly edited episodes, which will be edited thanks to your generous contributions from this campaign!
To celebrate the podcast launch, we're planning to host a live event in NYC featuring a roundtable discussion.
We're also gearing up for recording our second season!
