In the After, the world as we knew it has ended, and those left are adapting as best as they can. Grief is isolating, made heavier by a culture that rushes healing and avoids the unfixable. In the After is a love story of survival, imagining a world that holds people exactly where they are.

Mission Statement

Navigating our own loss, we rarely saw the duality of grief portrayed honestly in entertainment. Through this story, we hope those experiencing loss feel embraced, and those who haven’t yet arrived in this devastating new world can have a better understanding through the universe we’ve created.

The Story

The weird thing about sudden, world-shattering events is how normal everything is… until it isn’t. When we went to bed on October 1, 2020, both of our worlds were marching on as expected, but before Noon the next day, the unthinkable happened, and we found ourselves thrown into an impossible-to-understand new world. The old world was gone, and we were now standing in an apocalypse-stricken landscape where someone vital no longer stood beside us. Theresa, my wife and Diann's friend (though "friend" never felt like a big enough word; they were family in every way that mattered), was dead.

In the year that followed Theresa's death, while discussing our odds at surviving an apocalypse, Diann brought up that we were surviving an apocalypse, our world DID blow up… even if the outside world remained relatively the same, the entire makeup of our world had changed, and in that moment… In the After was born.

When the complete and final destruction of your world happens, how do you survive the apocalypse it creates?

In the After is a sci-fi drama audio fiction that explores grief, loss, and human connection through the same group of survivors in two parallel worlds: a modern-day grief support group and a post-apocalyptic manifestation of what it feels like to live with significant loss. Throughout the series, we see both worlds mirror one another, as they glitch between realities during key moments. Featuring a diverse ensemble cast, In the After utilizes a flashback structure to explore a different character’s grief-driven backstory in each episode.

Adley and Tennyson stand at the story's center- best friends grappling with profound loss. Adley wears her sarcasm as a defense against vulnerability. Her loss has made her unpredictable. Tennyson is empathetic with a great sense of humor, the true hero of the series, compassionate and brave, she is determined to survive. Ultimately, it’s their friendship that keeps them grounded in an otherwise tumultuous world. Together, they are part of a group of survivors who have become found family.

It is a character-driven story of survival on multiple levels. In Season 1, the group focuses on an overarching goal: rescuing Jeanie in the apocalyptic world while simultaneously assisting with Annie’s custody battle in the real world. The group encounters several challenges in both realms, including a relentless, poisonous fog that symbolizes the loss of hope. In the real world, these struggles are mirrored with parallel high stakes, further explored through flashbacks.

The series is also about the need for human connection and the chosen family our characters find within the group. In the end, hope is the ultimate tool for survival.

Outtake Productions has years of experience creating high-quality, impactful work on independent budgets. The early seasons of our web series Or So the Story Goes were produced with minimal equipment and self-taught skills, yet went on to exceed those limitations in both reach and quality.

As our work evolved, so did our resources. With later seasons and our series Kith & Kin, we were able to increase our budget and bring on a professional crew, resulting in our most successful work to date, with multiple awards, international coverage, and continued streaming success via SeekaTV.

In the After builds on this foundation, combining our established filmmaking expertise with the audio fiction experience gained from our co-produced podcast Moose on a Highway. Outtake Productions will oversee all remote recording through Riverside.com, as well as editing, marketing, and distribution.

Funds raised will directly support cast, sound design, composition, and other essential production & post productions costs needed to bring this story to life at its highest possible quality.

In the After is a love story to survivors. Navigating our own loss, we realized we didn’t see an accurate representation of the duality of grief in movies, TV, or podcasts. So, we set out to do just that.
