The Story
"I'm not a young girl."
"Mix Matched Socks" is a film about the turbulent, yet powerful relationship between a single mother and her only daughter.
Martha is saying goodbye to her daughter for what feels like forever. She is officially going to have an empty nest as Olivia is moving to the city for college. As a sendoff and to spend some much-needed quality time with her daughter, Martha packs their bags and books a stay at an apartment she found online (for a steal).
The two begin to clash when it comes to their romantic lives, Martha talks on the phone with her boyfriend and Olivia is flirting with Mark, the bellboy.
Martha begins to uncover some of Olivia's secrets and must come to terms with the idea that her daughter is growing up in more ways than one.
I am the first in my family to leave home for college. As a first-generation student and being the only child to a single mother, leaving was hard to put it simply. As I grew up, I came to the realization of just how scary and strange this big move was for my mom as well. She was going to be living alone for the first time in 18 years and her daughter was living in a completely different state.
There are countless stories told from the perspective of a young adult flying the nest and the challenges they face as they learn to be on their on their for the first. I wanted to ask the question of how our parents deal with it. How do they change from this experience as they are equally transforming their lives along with ours?
In this story, I wish to explore the complexities of a mother-and-daughter relationship through the lens of a mother. When you have a primary parent, they become more like a friend than a guardian at times. The film will tackle how those boundaries are pushed and how that affects the balance of the relationship.
When it comes to our visual references, we are greatly influenced by the style of the French New Wave. Mix Matched Socks is a story where we bridge together two generations; similar films are "Lady Bird", "Terms of Endearment", and "Mermaids". The story is driven by the environment Martha and Olivia are placed in, forcing them to come to terms with their differences.

About This Team
Nicolette (Nikki) Page (Writer, Director, Producer)
Nikki is a filmmaker from Everett, Massachusetts. A senior in New York University's Undergraduate Film Program, she mixes female-centered stories and punk rock influences in her work. This year, she worked with ReFrame, a project founded by Sundance and Women in Film which works to balance gender representation in film. Currently interning at Stay Golden Features, she looks to continue creating and supporting female film in her post-graduate career. She and Sebastian Zufelt have been collaborating since their sophomore year, attending NFFTY 2023 with the short film “Soft Launch."
Sebastian Zufelt (Producer, Editor)
Sebastian is a filmmaker from Seattle, Washington, based in New York City. Currently interning at A24, his films focus on stories of emotional conflict within interpersonal relationships. His film "Soft Launch," profiled in Washington Square News, screened at NFFTY 2023 and won Best Screenplay at the Gallatin Film Awards. He produced & edited Nikki's previous film, "Pest" and is preparing a festival run for his latest short film, "New Year, New Me."
Meagan Wachtel (Director of Photography)
Meagan is a Cuban-American filmmaker from New Providence, New Jersey. Across her work as a cinematographer, writer, and director, her films balance a love of classic filmic techniques and her modern visual sensibility. Her films often navigate the hardships of womanhood, mental health, cultural differences, and queerness. She has shot several award winning NYU thesis productions, is a recipient of Panavision’s “New Filmmaker” grant, received an accreditation from Cannes International Film Festival, and placed at the world’s largest youth film festival, NFFTY. She’s eager to enter production for her capstone project, "Santo," at New York University. You can view her previous work at www.meagantheepisces.com.
Marcos Guerra (Production Designer)
Marcos is a filmmaker from Hatboro, Pennsylvania. He particularly loves to lean into horror with his work as a writer, director, and production designer. He was the production designer for Nikki & Sebastian's junior year films, turning the same apartment into a roach-infested mess and a suburban childhood bedroom, both for next to no resources. He's currently preparing his latest short film, "Angelhood."
