Neuman is a dark-comedy short film set over the course of a single morning in the New York City recovery community. Our film follows Aoife as she tries her best to stay busy in her home group after the newcomer she's gotten 'involved' with disappears on the eve of his first sober anniversary.

Mission Statement

Recovery is often portrayed in film as chaos and despair, with characters longing to do what they can no longer do safely. 'Neuman' aims to shift that narrative. Our film is about a few of the lucky ones - those who have stopped drinking and are living sober, imperfect lives, one day at a time.

The Story

My name is Timothy Jacob Elledge, I’m a filmmaker based in New York City and I’ve been directing commercials, music videos and shorts for the past decade. My work has been featured by Vimeo Staff Picks, NOWNESS, One Point Four, NoBudge, BOOOOOOOM, Film Shortage, HYPEBEAST, and Stereogum. I’m ready to take my collective experiences and re-focus my energy on my first love, movies.

My first amateur short played at a handful of festivals across the country, including the Oscar-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival— now a few years and one thousand lessons later, I need some help as I prepare to make Neuman, my first narrative short as a professional.

Neuman is a dark-comedy short film set over the course of a single morning in the New York City recovery community. We follow a woman called Aoife as she tries her best to keep busy in her home group after the newcomer she's gotten 'involved' with disappears on the eve of his first sober anniversary.

At its core, Neuman is a love story between two middle-aged characters rediscovering feelings typically associated with youth. It’s a story about the awkwardness of love and the stubborn habits that persist as we grow. It just so happens to take place in the sober community.

Neuman is a rare film about alcoholics where no one is drinking, nor is anyone pining for a drink. It’s not a film about hitting rock bottom – our story begins after that. Our film bears witness to the more subtle realities of a life in recovery: the bonds that form, the humor that carries people through, and the resilience that emerges from embracing the messiness of life.

As a filmmaker, I approach everything I write with the intention of directing and my screenplay for Neuman exemplifies this approach. The narrative is deliberately contained—two locations and a minimal lead cast—designed to be both artistically and logistically achievable. It’s written to be filmed; to be made.

Neuman marks an artistic turning point for me. After years of creative resistance, a period of talking myself into and out of film ideas, this project stands as a re-entry into the arena I want to live in. A period of writing, directing, and making —with less waiting. Most everything is in place, we now just need your help as we attempt to gather the remaining funds necessary to make the film we know this can be.

Filmmaking is the most collaborative art form on the planet. But it’s also one of the most expensive mediums there is and so, Asking for Help and financial support is unfortunately a huge part of the process. I don’t take lightly the generosity that I’m asking for, but I also know that I can’t do this story justice without your support. Every contribution, at every level, will be a tangible, invaluable brick in the structure we’re building that will eventually become a film called Neuman.

Short films don’t exist without the generous help of those who love the art or the artist. I’m self-funding a significant portion of the film, but it isn’t enough to cover all of our costs. I’m excited and ready to make this film, I just can’t do it alone!

What Your Support, well, Supports!

Within our Wishlist, our needs are enumerated and available to understand on a more line-item basis. But your contributions go to supporting the creation of this film across all stages - Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production - summarized in brief here:

Pre-Production

This is where we're currently as we launch this campaign—toiling away locking down locations, casting actors, and negotiating permits, and much, much more. And of course, fundraising! The next month of this campaign, we will be laser focused on building the world of Neuman across all aspects and departments. Some of the things we're looking to lockdown during this time, and which we will be able to afford with your contributions are:

  • Insurance: Production company A+M Creative is underwriting this the logistic support on this film, but insuring a film production is costly, especially if you're doing it independently.
  • Selecting Crew and Staffing Departments: In order for our movie to get across the line, we need to hire below the line. Neuman will staff several departments, from Camera to Art, and from Makeup to Sound. We'll need the resources to acquire and support the best filmworkers we can bring on for this project.
  • Casting: Working with our amazing Casting Director Charlotte Arnoux, CSA, we aim to bring a stellar lead duo together on screen in the characters of Aoife and Neuman, along with the supporting cast across the film.
  • Locations: we've chosen distinct, cinematic locations here in Brooklyn that will bring the lived-in world of Neuman to life.

Production

This is where we're headed—making the film. Our shoot dates are set, and our campaign will run in parallel. Continued fundraising will allow us to close books on our shoot soon after. Know that your contributions will go to supporting:

  • Our Shoot Days: Over two days, we will shoot interiors as well as the climax of the film, which is a complicated outdoor shooting scenario, intentionally set in the tough cold of a Brooklyn February. Your support will help us afford generators, warming tents, hot food and make these days ecstatically productive!
  • The Camera Package: To ensure a cinematic look, we're using the cutting edge Alexa 35 cinema camera, allowing our DP and director to capture unrivaled visual beauty in the highest fidelity.
  • The Labor of our Cast and Crew: The most important obligation we have to honor in the creation of this film is the labor of our cast and crew. It's only with their hard work on our shoot days that we'll make it across the finish line of our production. You can play a huge part in helping us to honor their work by supporting the value of their labor through your contributions.
  • And very importantly, Hot Meals: A fed cast and crew is a happy cast and crew!

Post-Production:

Once our film is in the can, we then need to make it... one more time. This is our most challenging period for the film and where your contributions can go an exceptionally long way by supporting some of these aspects:

  • The Edit: once Neuman is shot, then we'll have to piece it together. Our edit will be a time-consuming but ultimately fruitful period for the filmmakers.
  • Sound Design and Original Music: the sound design and music for Neuman will help to embellish the world and make it audibly palpable. We'll hire a Sound Designer to help us wed image and sound, and we're likely to license a track for one sick needle drop.
  • Festivals and Finding Neuman a Home: Our goal will be to apply to a number of high-level festivals, as well as find continue screening opportunities at regional festivals where we can celebrate the film amongst peers and contemporaries. After our festival run, we'll find a permanent digital home for Neuman.

All of these aspects are available to support, and you can check out our Wishlist for a more line-by-line breakdown of what we need to produce Neuman.

With this campaign, we hope to engage both an audience and a community of likeminded, supportive individuals who believe that making movies—while extremely difficult—is one of the greatest artistic endeavors we have as humans.

If our campaign speaks to you, we wholeheartedly ask that you to share it with your network. The more people who share this campaign, the more chances we have to connect with contributors, and that helps us make the best film we possibly can. If you know anyone who can and will support a filmmaker making his first professional short film, focused on telling complicated, messy, human stories, then this campaign is for them!

You can also help spread the word via social media - here's a couple easy copy/paste messages that can help us reach even further:
