The Story
Set in the summer of 2012, 한 바람, follows the story of Juna (준아) and Halmeoni (할머니) against the beautiful backdrop of rural South Korea. Sprawling rice fields stretch underneath the green mountains in front of Halmeoni’s farm. Juna, left alone with her Grandmother, questions herself, feeling foreign to her own culture. Both being stubborn souls, the two butt heads, eventually leading to Juna running away. Lost in the middle of nowhere, Juna collapses in a field, full of emotion. Her grandmother abandons her tough, unconcerned demeanor as she desperately searches for Juna.
Uniquely set in South Korea, 한 바람, shows a perspective often unexplored of how children of immigrants fit into their “homeland.” The film is a story of resilience for those who find themselves caught in between. Neither fitting in one place or another, Juna’s experience calls into question of where we call home. A poetic perspective into how fractured maternal lineage manifests itself into a generational arc of healing, through the emotional landscape of young Juna.

Director's Statement
Having grown up as a child of Korean immigrants in rural Missouri, I have always felt like an outsider to my home and my own culture. The summers I spent on my grandparent’s farm in South Korea in my childhood were the rare times I felt truly at home. I always felt I was not American enough even though I was born and raised here and certainly not Korean enough. My relationship with my grandparents always made me feel at home. This film is about home. How does one consider their home in a place they have never lived?
I aim to show the dichotomous experiences of young Juna and Halmeoni united in one story that transcends generational and cultural differences. Portraying the resilience of youth that is often forgotten, I juxtapose Juna and Halmeoni’s characters against each other to show the spectrum of nuance that life offers. To have a sense of belonging is a universal need– humanity depends on it. Where we belong, however, is typically based in our identity, whether it be how others view us or how we view ourselves. The importance of truly knowing all aspects of ourselves is why I am making this story. Regardless of our identity, we seek to find a place of solace beyond our physical surroundings but in our hearts.

But Juna and Halmeoni's story can only be told through the help of your support. Your financial donations will allow our international student production find means of travel, transportation, food, and housing. Additionally, this campaign will help us fund our film equipment and submissions to various film festivals. As a token of our gratitude, we are happy to share all of our wonderful incentives, which include (but aren't limited to) personalized messages and family recipes. We hope that as you support Juna and Halmeoni's story, you'll find personal comfort and healing in our exploration of home.
