Everyone yearns for connection. Some seem to find it easily and others pretend not to care. Outbound is an exploration of the isolation experienced by so many, especially the teenagers caught in the crosshairs of the pandemic. This film gives validation to those feelings and hope for the future.

The Story
The Wanderer is alone in a post-apocalyptic, isolated world where broken memories of disconnection drive even more seclusion. They tell themselves they’re better off this way, but is that true? Is their reality even an accurate portrayal of the world around them?
Outbound takes a journey through our protagonist’s past & present, memories & perspectives, reality & perception to arrive at the realization that things aren’t always what they seem, and that connection can overcome the lies we’ve come to believe about ourselves, if we’re only willing to reach out.
So many of us have experienced periods of isolation and loneliness in our lives. It's a highly universal experience that doesn’t get spoken about nearly enough. Outbound is such an important story because it can help give the isolated among us hope that things can get better, and sometimes that hope is all we need to start climbing out.
Our women-led, intergenerational, gender diverse, and award-winning cast and crew provide the foundation of a storytelling unit that brings each person’s unique perspective and approach to an already universal story, creating a richness and depth to the film that just wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

While there’s no time when connection between humans isn’t integral to our existence, the combined influence of the virtualization of society (at least partly due to the global pandemic), the lasting impacts of lockdown on vulnerable populations, and the increasing polarization in media and society have driven us to a time where we are more isolated than perhaps ever before in modern history. The Outbound team can’t solve this problem with a film, but we want to open conversations that can begin to nudge the needle in the right direction.
Visual Style
We’re so glad to be able to show and not just tell about the visual style of the film. As you watch the promo video above, notice how:
the present day scenes are cold and desaturated, giving an isolated feeling;
the flashback scenes are somewhat disturbed but more colorful; and
the final scene is much more saturated, hopeful, and clean.
Of course, the above looks are only preliminary, but give you a good idea where the production team is heading. Through art department, lighting, coloring, and more, the teams is producing an evocative and immersive visual landscape.
Production Timeline
Through the generosity of a few private donors, we have been able to fund pre-production and our first day of filming this past October 8th. The remaining two filming days are scheduled for November 18th and 19th, with post-production to end sometime early in 2024. We will apply to film festivals for approximately a year and release our work to the public in early 2025. (Note that pledges of $100 or more will get you access to the film as soon as it’s complete!)
Budget
The people on our team are the heart, soul, and mind of the project and so make up a significant percentage of our costs. In fact, paying and feeding our people makes up about 87% of the film’s budget! This is something we are very proud of.
For more details, visit the Wishlist tab above. If we raise more than our goal, we will fund our stretch goals: upgrading to a full-size crew on day 2, entering more festivals, travel costs to represent the film at festivals, and upgraded catering.
