Mission Statement
The Story
After being assigned a high-stakes heist by their eccentric boss Ricky, skilled locksmith Benny “Rush” Lincoln and his “cousin” Mace embark on an emotional journey between loyalty and morality. As they navigate the dangerous streets of Los Angeles, Rush grapples with the weight of his risky familiar lifestyle or a life of legitimacy with his girlfriend Sofia. With the stakes escalating and the authorities closing in, Rush must quickly make a decision that will shape the rest of his life- For better or for worse.

Born and raised in the foster care system, Rush had a tumultuous childhood marked by instability and hardship. It was in foster care where he met his longtime friend and cousin of no relation, Mace. Through their partnership, Mace helped groom Rush’s knack for lock-picking and criminal activities. However, it is Rush’s natural intuition and empathy that would go on to benefit him the most.

As a baby, Mason was left on the porch of a boss in organized crime. After being taken away by authorities at the age of 12, he was sent to foster care. He mastered manipulation and resourcefulness early on, living alongside Rush in the same foster home. Being 6 years older than him, Mace took on an older brother role in Rush’s life. Their bond was strengthened through shared experiences of adversity and survival. Mason's pursuit of power is hindered by paranoia and high expectations, straining his relationship with Rush as they navigate their criminal lives.
As the firstborn of a prestigious Los Angeles lawyer, Sofia Reyes struggles with living in her father's shadow. After being accepted to law school at Georgetown, she has big shoes to fill, and big decisions to make. Driven and uncompromising, she devotes herself to her career until she encounters Ben, whom she falls deeply in love with despite his troubling past and dangerous lifestyle. Stuck between rebellion and the path her father paved for her, Sofia encourages Rush to become legitimate and live happily ever after. Her presence symbolizes a connection to an unknown world outside of crime, offering Rush a glimpse of a life beyond Los Angeles.

From Al, the director:
As a filmmaker, I am deeply committed to exploring the profound depths of human emotion and the moments that are harder to express. Throughout my creative journey, cinema has served as a refuge, a sanctuary where I could connect with stories and characters that made me feel understood and less alone in the world. It is this mystical power of storytelling that inspires me to continue my filmmaking journey.
Collaboration lies at the heart of my creative process. From my earliest days as a filmmaker, I have worked closely with my brother, forming a strong creative partnership that we can both rely on. Together, we share a passion for crafting narratives that resonate with audiences on a deeply emotional level. I believe in leading by example and empowering the talented individuals who join me on this journey. Every member of the team brings their unique perspective and expertise, pushing the creative process of our collective vision.
In addition to my artistic ventures, I am deeply invested in shedding light on the flaws and shortcomings of the different systems in the United States. Through my work, I aim to amplify the voices of those who have been marginalized and overlooked, advocating for change and reform within the system. With each project, I strive to create an immersive cinematic experience that invites viewers to explore the complexities of the human experience and find solace in the shared journey of storytelling. My ultimate goal is to create a space where audiences can see themselves reflected on screen, forging connections and finding comfort in the realization that they are not alone.
The atmosphere of "Picking and Choosing" will use cold, nighttime scenes with warm, daytime shots to highlight Rush's internal contrast. Inspired by the gritty realism of the Safdie Brothers' Good Time and the emotional depth of Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting, we aim for authenticity. Close-up shots and natural lighting convey intimacy; while steady subjective shots immerse viewers in Rush's perspective. The color scheme features muted teals and oranges for a raw, yet evocative, visual experience.

To bring our film to life, we want to pay our hard-working crew the rates they deserve. In addition to crew wages, a good amount of the budget will go towards set dressing, props, and locations to pull off the glandular scope of the project. What is a heist film without cool locations?
Next, we will need lens and lighting rentals to bring the vision to life and rightfully serve the story. Lastly, the remaining budget will be used for post-production as well as to cover any entry fees for film festivals.
We plan on submitting this film to around 40 film festivals around the world. Some of the festivals we’ll be looking at entering include Slamdance, Dances with Films, New Filmmakers LA, and many more. We hope to make this into the feature film we all know it can be!
