The Story
Why we need your help!
VOXGIRL is a graduate thesis film from Chapman University, made by the hands and brains (and hearts) of dozens of passionate students who are offering their blood, sweat, and tears to tell this story.
We are fortunate enough to have the support and mentorship from amazing professors and production staff at Chapman University, as well as access to great facilities and equipment. However, the fact remains that there are lots of external expenses involved in filmmaking, especially on high caliber film sets--thats where we need help from YOU! All of the funds donated will be funneled directly into the production of the film: food, locations, permit fees, trucks, set design, and other essential elements that you can see in our “Wish List” tab.
Director’s Statement -- and why you should help us!
As a filmmaker, I have always been interested in telling stories about characters that are misunderstood or misrepresented. Our protagonist, Caroline, is no exception. She must face a crisis of identity as she is hounded by the cult following of her syrupy kids' TV persona, 'Voxgirl,' while also searching for genuine self-expression. This internal struggle is externalized when she is invited to the home studio of Solomon, an eccentric producer with arguably more problematic personal demons.
Though framed as a dark satire and thriller, VOXGIRL should resonate with anyone who has made an attempt at some form of artistic expression or sought validation for their authentic self. With musical inspiration from bubble-gum pop of the early 1990s and song writing maestros like Joni Mitchell and Carole King, VOXGIRL will be a wild trip that takes joy in grimly satirizing music artistry and how we consume popular culture--especially the commodification of young female music artists.
VOXGIRL will rely heavily on the music as a storytelling device. As an independent musician myself, I am fascinated by exploring a certain era of music and trying to capture the essence of a musical time period. The seed of inspiration for me often begins with a song, so music inevitably becomes a crucial element to my filmmaking, as is the case with VOXGIRL.
Ultimately, VOXGIRL is a very personal story for me, as it represents the search to be understood and acknowledged in the way we desire it. In addition to that, snappy tunes, heartfelt songwriting, and one-of-a-kind characters are sure to keep the lip gloss popping and your butt on the edge of your seat!
