The Story

What Will Be Here? is a sci-fi audio drama about living on a doomed earth and building things anyway. This ten episode limited series launches November 21, 2021 - but we need your help to fund it.
In this fiction podcast, five friends send a rocket to space with a collection of recordings on it that document the world’s decline, the stories they want to tell, and their efforts in building this rocket to get their message to the stars. They wonder what their world will have become by the time their message is listened to. What will be left of a planet that has destroyed itself? What will be left of the people who lived there? What will become of their stories? What will be here?

we think you'll like this show!
What Will Be Here? is the work of one producer, five writers, one editor, three directors, four sound designers, eleven actors, three graphic artists, one composer, and one transcriptionist. Overall, there's eighteen of us wearing different hats, many doubling or tripling up on different aspects of production. Most of our cast and all of our crew have worked on other indie audio drama productions, from Sidequesting to Seen and Not Heard to Null/Void to Sector Ø to Dining in the Void (and many, many more). Everyone working on this show knows exactly what they're doing, and they're great at it. For more information about the team behind the show, check out the aptly-labeled Team tab.
We've all spent countless hours working on this project without any promise of payment because we're truly passionate about what we're making. Right now, a quarter of the show is fully produced and over three-fourths are recorded. Your support will help us cross the finish line and pay our cast and crew!

What Will Be Here? features 5 main characters: Armani, Kei, Jules, Suri, and Dane.
Armani is an aerospace engineer with a passion for storytelling. They're interested in documenting and passing on stories and legends. Armani's forte is all the things - building and launching the rocket, but also helping to make sure it doesn't get trapped in the gravity of stars on its way out of the solar system.
Kei is a psychologist who also enjoys building things. Or a mechanic with a hobby for psychology - you decide. Kei is an all-around gremlin - the one with the wild ideas, which are only not bad ideas because of how competent Kei is. Kei's forte is construction the rocket, and eir recordings are often just to make Jules happy, capturing the chaos of eir workshop.
Jules is a chemist who makes and sets off hobby rockets in their free time. They're an optimist who tries to see the best in people, though a bit naive in their hopefulness. She’s the de-facto leader of the team, having been the one to bring everyone together.
Suri is an artist with a knack for acquiring forbidden goods, a definite Robin-Hood character beneath the layers of paint on her overalls. Suri has a strong code of ethics that frequently go against the law, but if you’re in a pickle, you want Suri on your side. Her forte is acquiring the materials they need for the rocket.
Dane is a physicist who used to be an activist. He’s burnt out and generally hopeless, and has a lot of rage under the surface because he cares so much about the people he loves. Dane's forte is what happens to the rocket after it has launched - the calculations for its orbit getting out of the solar system. Dane’s recordings focus on documenting everything that went wrong to bring the world to this point.

For a full breakdown of the cost of this show, check out the Incentives tab - but here is our budget at at quick glance. We're asking for a total of $4000, which breaks down to $400 an episode. What Will Be Here? is a limited series audio drama, which means that there will only be this first season, and that this is your only chance to support the show.

Here's what people are saying about What Will Be Here?
"What Will Be Here? is a show whose title and characters have a deep preoccupation with the future, but its true emotional core lies in its beautiful examination of the present. The story follows the cast as they build a rocket to space, depositing within it their opinions on current affairs, anxieties regarding the state of humanity, and simpler musings on the mundane. Like the society in which they live, the characters are flawed, and great care is taken to flesh them out as still human and multidimensional. I'm looking forward to What Will Be Here? even if we never truly get an answer!" - Tau Zaman, creator of CARAVAN and ROGUE RUNNERS
"I'm really intrigued by the concept, and I love that the series builds up to finally hearing the complete message that's being sent out into space. And I think it's a fascinating progression - we hear a lot about needing to find hope, but what's the process for that? How do we build hope together? What are we actually hoping for? I can't wait to hear the show's answers to those questions." - D.J. Sylvis, creator of Moonbase Theta, Out and MonkeyTales
"What Will Be Here?” is full of harrows, humor, & humanity in such perfect measure, you’ll find yourself immediately taken by its cast of characters & immersive world, both acted & sound designed to absolute perfection by the way — & that’s just the first episode! I’m so happy to have joined this crew & I truly can’t wait to see what will be." - A. R. Olivieri, creator of Great & Terrible and 2298

This is a story that came out of the global pandemic. It explores the feelings of helplessness an individual has when faced with multiple large-scale crises. At the time of this podcast's writing, this included a pandemic, California brush fires and heat waves, Texas flooding and blizzards, your standard global warming, widespread corruption in the government, and everything else 2020 brought. Multiple times were writers meetings postponed because someone was at a protest, or someone else had a personal emergency, or there was an attempted insurrection at the capital and we just couldn't focus. The landscape in which this story was written and produced greatly influenced how it turned out.
What Will Be Here? is set on earth two hundred years in the future, where large-scale crises are fully normalized. The earth is dying, and it's nothing new. But despite the bleak backdrop, the story focuses on a group of friends determined to make something together. It's a story of hope, of overcoming challenges, of making things that might be temporary - but also things that might be launched into space and continue on forever. The experience of the characters mirrors the experience of the cast and crew; both creating something new against a background of tragedy, and neither knowing quite where it will end up.
Despite the setting, this is a hopeful story - one of friendship and resilience.
