Mission Statement

We are making Cosmic Heirloom now because a buried history is resurfacing and it deserves truth, not distortion. As filmmakers and researchers, we’re restoring what was lost with clarity and respect. Without it, this story risks being misunderstood again.

The Story

Cosmic Heirloom is a new historical documentary born from a powerful creative collaboration between half-brothers David Moss and Brian Craig Hinderberger. While the short film is complete in structure and storytelling, we’re now seeking support to secure licensed archival images that will deepen the film’s historical authenticity and bring this remarkable story to life on screen.

A Story That was Buried on Purpose

Over four hundred years ago, a sacred tradition vanished from the Western world. Not gradually. Not accidentally. It was buried through fear, censorship, and shifting cultural power. Today, that same story is returning… through science, therapy, and a global cultural reawakening. But the history it rests on is fragmented, misunderstood, and in many cases; missing entirely.

Cosmic Heirloom exists to bring that lost story back. Check out the trailer!

Why This Film — Why Now

We are living in a moment where psilocybin is being re-examined by universities, clinicians, and policymakers around the world. But as the conversation accelerates, the deeper historical context the origins, the suppression, the rediscovery—is often reduced, distorted, or ignored.

This film asks a critical question:

Who decides what is medicine… and what is forbidden?

And more importantly:

What happens when sacred knowledge is erased—only to return at exactly the moment we need it most? Without this project, that story risks being told incompletely or not at all.

How This Film Began

This project didn’t start in a studio. It started in a speak-easy in a Bothell, Washington pub near Seattle named Side Hustle Local. After delivering a sold-out, two-hour speakeasy presentation on the hidden history of psilocybin, David Moss shared years of deeply researched material—connecting ancient ritual, mid-century science, and modern-day resurgence. Watching the video from in that room, I realized immediately: "WE NEED TO MAKE THIS INTO A FILM!"

Within weeks, Brian traveled to Seattle to meet up with both David and cinematographer Jordan Chamberlain to capture the core interview, shot in a direct-to-camera style inspired Errol Morris’ Interrotron style shot in The Fog of War; intimate, unfiltered, and deeply human.

Family Collaboration

Cosmic Heirloom is more than a documentary, it’s a collaboration between two half-brothers who have spent years building creative trust.

David Moss has been a key force behind several of Brian's previous award winning films, including Ambient Caregiver and Longevity Beta Tester, and contributed to the development of Song of Sunset. His background as a technologist and longevity expert, combined with years of independent historical research, brings a rare depth to this story.

Together, we approach this film from two perspectives:

  • The Researcher uncovering buried history
  • The Filmmaker shaping it into a cinematic experience

That combination is what makes this project unique.

Our Approach

We are crafting Cosmic Heirloom as a visually rich, investigative film that blends:

  • Direct-to-camera storytelling
  • Archival photography and historical imagery
  • Cinematic b-roll and environmental visuals
  • Thoughtful, restrained narration

Our goal is not to sensationalize but to clarify, contextualize, and respect the story.

Where We Are Now

The short film is complete in structure and story. We’ve captured the core interview. We’ve built the narrative. We know the film works.

Now we’re entering the most important phase:

Bringing the history to life visually.

This means securing licensed archival photography, artwork, and footage, from sources like mid-century publications, research institutions, and historical collections; that will ground the story in real, tangible history.

Why Your Support Matters

This is where you come in.

Your support allows us to:

  • Properly license rare and important archival materials
  • Elevate the film to festival and broadcast standards
  • Expand this short into a full feature documentary
  • Bring in additional voices connected to this story

Without these elements, the story remains abstract. With them, it becomes undeniable.

For this production we want to include a variety of licensed shots featuring R. Gordon and Valentina Wasson, Timothy Leary, Maria Sabina, Roger Heim and Richard Nixon.

The Promise

We’re committed to delivering:

  • A completed short documentary ready for festival and public release
  • Transparent updates throughout the process
  • A path toward a full-length feature that deepens this story even further

This film will restore a piece of history and share it with the world in a way that’s thoughtful, cinematic, and lasting.
