“MUTE” is a short animated film set in a world populated by people born without a mouth. When a freak accident leads to the discovery that people can create their own mouths  (by cutting a bloody gash into the place their mouths would normally be ), the world rejoices, it’s inhabitants celebrating their newfound ability to vocalize. This film is such a unique blend of things that I love; it’s a dark, almost grotesque sci-fi concept set to a a bouncy soundtrack (from Happy Camper) with a children’s aesthetic. And, best of all, it’s just fun to watch.

I am a 22-year-old woman of color. I can’t tell you how unbelievably refreshing and rare it is to see characters of that description onscreen that are people—real people that think for themselves and aren’t just someone’s sister or daughter, standing in the background. The women in Farah Goes Bang look like my friends and talk like my friends.  It is so precious to see my age group portrayed on screen in a way that isn’t condescending. Yes, world, we 22-year-old women have more to talk about than parties and our relationships. We are also more than a bland pastishe of our parents and their problems. And, thank god, Farah Goes Bang understands this, understands us.
