Taking ActionCinema for Justice: A letter from Eric Garner's widow
April 4, 2017
We received this letter today.
Storytelling has always been about shining a light into the darkest corners of ourselves and our society.
Roee Messinger is endeavoring to imagine an alternate present. One in which Eric Garner's killer gets a trial. He's bending the entire genre of documentary to stage a mock trial - with real lawyers and real witnesses. And his work has a real impact, especially on those closest to the victim. Read.
A LETTER FROM ESAW SNIPES-GARNER
My name is Esaw Snipes-Garner. I am the wife of Eric Garner who was killed by the police in New York on July 17th 2014. On the one-year anniversary of my husband’s death, a young filmmaker came up to me at a rally and said he wanted to make a movie about Eric. A lot of people have approached me about making movies and writing books, but this guy had a special idea.
He wanted to make a film about the trial that should have followed Eric’s death; a movie in which real lawyers will examine the actual witnesses who would have testified in court had the case been tried. No script, no actors, just the truth. On March 7th we launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the film. So far the support we’ve gotten has been incredible, and I want to ask you to help us keep the momentum going so that we can show the world, the trial that should have taken place!
If you would like to help us here’s how:
Please follow this link, watch our video and contribute what you can. There are 2 days left to the campaign and we need just one more push to get us over the hump. I’m sure that if each of you made just a small contribution we’d make it way past our goal!
I have no illusions about justice, and no film will ever bring my Eric back to me, but I hope that if this film is made and we keep talking about this issue, that maybe the next victim might be saved, or that at least that victim’s family may have a better chance to get justice for their loss.
Thank you all,
Wife of Eric Garner
